Red Mile licenses UE3 for Sin City game

The Unreal Engine 3 has been announced as the engine to be used in the Sin City game.

Game publisher Red Mile has announced that it will be using Epic's Unreal Engine 3 to build a new game based on the Sin City franchise created by Frank Miller.

Red Mile first announced the Sin City game was in the making a little while ago, putting developer Union Entertainment on the job. In the past Union has worked on games such as The Darkness.

Frank Diller, writer of The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay and close friend of Frank Miller, has been tapped to write the story for the game. The Franks have said they've "been having a party coming up with nasty stuff for the game."

"We're extremely excited to be working with Red Mile. We have been Frank Miller / Sin City fans for a long time and are pleased that our technology will be a key factor, and we’re confident that they’re going to make a great game with it,” Said Mark Rein of Epic in a press statement.

The Unreal Engine 3 is getting near ubiquitous for games nowadays and more than one title using it made it into our top games of 2007.

I suppose the main question then is how good do you think the game will end up being? Do you think the Unreal Engine 3 is getting a bit too popular perhaps? Let us know your thoughts in the forums.

I think it's great that a lot of games are using the Unreal Engine 3 as if your computer can run one game well, it should run all the games fairly well.

well, the advanced shaders will help with Sin City's black and white theme.

but i DO wish they can release a patch for AA support, or some kind of fake bluring method like the edgeAA used in Crysis

The Unreal Engine 3 is the first of the latest generation of FPS engines to be really useful in a broad setting. The D3 engine showed us what was possible, but was just too far ahead to be broadly useful (e.g a universal light engine, but no soft shadows). The U3 engine though has enough uses to make it really one of the only viable FPS engines out at the moment. However, there's competition looming, as more people eventually get computers good enough to run Crytec 2 and ID Tech 5 becomes available. Although here's hoping the id's next revolutionary technology (unique texturing) is more broadly applicable than the last one they did (universal dynamic lighting).
