BAFTA winners announced

Wii Sports dominated the BAFTAs this year, claiming almost half the awards.

The BAFTAs are over for another year and the list, which was unpopular with some religious groups has been narrowed down.

Personally, we think the whole thing was a bit of a farce anyway - some of the games on the list hadn't even been released yet, like Kane and Lynch: Dead Men.

Either way, here's the winners:

Best Action and Adventure Game: Crackdown
Artisitic Achievement: Okami
Best Game: BioShock
Best Casual Game: Wii Sports
Best Gameplay: Wii Sports
Innovation Award: Wii Sports
Best Multiplayer: Wii Sports
Best Original Score: Okami
Best Sports Game: Wii Sports
Best Strategy and Simulation: Wii Sports
Best Story: God of War 2
Best Technical Achievement: God of War 2
Best Use of Audio: Crackdown
PC World Public Vote Award: Football Manager 2007

Yeah, I know what you're going to say and I agree. Wii Sports?! God of War 2 beating BioShock for best story? Madness. Complain in the forums.

God of war 2 get best story and best technical achievement?

That doesn't sit well with me.

There is a football management game?!?! Oh man... what's next? towel boy manager?

Ermm.. Best drama prior to release perhaps? With all the goat chopping and topless girls running around?

This is what happens when you let British people rate games. I'd check whether or not Nintendo made a friendly 'donation' to BAFTA recently...

I dunno what they were smoking but I almost disagree with the entire list.

I think when they put wii sports on strategy, they meant to put supreme commander but then noticed when it was too late to change.

you got to be joking me:

Best Casual Game: Wii Sports
Best Gameplay: Wii Sports
Innovation Award: Wii Sports
Best Multiplayer: Wii Sports
Best Sports Game: Wii Sports
Best Strategy and Simulation: Wii Sports

Best innovation ok, but the rest???

Some of the mighty Valve games like TF2 and EP2 and Portal were certainly out too late to be entered in the contest, else Wii Sports would have far fewer awards! I do enjoy a game of Wii Sports now and again, though :)

Wii Sports does deserve the innovation and casual awards, but the rest s just stupid.

And yet games like Kane and Lynch, which haven't been released yet, are eligible?!
UncertainGod 24th October 2007, 13:53 Quote
ah, yeah. In that case Portal should have won the innovation award.

ok, i can understand wii being an innovative, multiplayer, sport game... its casual and has great gameplay. whether or not its better than other games, its a matter of opinion.

but STRATEGY AND SIMULATION???

HUH???? what the..............
Hamish 24th October 2007, 14:30 Quote
lol i wonder if any of those judges have actually played any of the games..
cjoyce1980 24th October 2007, 15:02 Quote
did anyone actual play these games?! bioshock yes, but the rest.........

maybe the voters are the same people that choose to ban manhunt, in favor of the colourful and shiny wii sports!
KoenVdd 24th October 2007, 16:00 Quote
Hope the orange box is still eligible for next year. I also think they should have separate awards for the different platforms.
Jordan Wise 24th October 2007, 17:36 Quote
wii sports is a novelty, not a game. It comes boxed with the flipping console for crying out loud. Its akin to the eyetoy imo, who the hell has played it for more than an hour? For that reason it can only EVER be eligable for a casual game, which it rightfully won. Strategy? Is it hell
D3s3rt_F0x 24th October 2007, 18:08 Quote
Who votes for these exactly?

People who dont know about games?

Wii Sports in the Best Stratergy and Simulation Category lol

And God of War 2? What is this game? best story? I think me having babies being male would be better odds than that having best story.
Carnival 24th October 2007, 18:29 Quote
Whatever the judges were on, I want some. I feel like making some really stupid decisions right now, and they seem to have the perfect drug for that.

Best strategy my arse.
johnnyboy700 24th October 2007, 19:03 Quote
Erm, I think the real issue with Wii Sports getting the Best Strategy is that it won the Best Strategy and Simulation and not Best Strategy. I would have said that it won because of the Simulation part of the award and not the Strategy, so the real area of complaint should be directed at the BAFTA award categories and not at the Wii or Nintendo.

Anyway, bloody good luck to Nintendo, I think the Wii is immense fun and given that Microsoft are now replacing the Core 360 with a Family 360 I would say that they are trying to take a bit of the market that Nintendo seem to be streaking ahead with. I seem to recall a press release that said the Wii hit 1 million units sold in 38 weeks, it took 60 weeks for the 360 to hit the million mark.
