Kane and Lynch Hands-On Preview

If you asked any decently-versed gamer to list this years next big titles then they’d reel off a list of the obvious first; Halo 3, Mass Effect, Quake Wars and Assassin’s Creed, with a couple more thrown on top no doubt once personal tastes and console favourites have been accounted for.

I’m betting that Kane and Lynch: Dead Men would be one of the later additions to the list for most – one they mention once the obvious have been excluded. Kane and Lynch: Dead Men is one of those titles which seems to be always on the periphery.

That’s not an insult to the game – not yet anyway, but it is something I believe to be true. The game is forever on the edge of our gaming radar. It pulls us in with great trailers and the promise of a visceral and well-told story but then at the same time it lets us go by never managing to prove itself above any of the above, core titles.

The game opens with a rather stunning escape

That said, when we got a chance to go hands-on with the game we still leapt at the opportunity with both hands open and grasping for the controller. It may have been something to do with the idea of finally playing a game which handled crime in a compelling and adult manner, with a focus on ‘cinematic realism’. It may have just been that the machine running Portal was taken for the time being.

Either way, we wanted to play Kane and Lynch from the off. You see, we live out on the periphery too, testing and tasting all the different games and technologies out there with us. In our experience it’s where all the tastiest things are – just on the verge between mainstream and cult.

Kane and Lynch have to complete all sorts of missions to settle their score

Will Kane and Lynch conform to that idea too, or will the taste of this game be too bloody and gritty for us to bear? We wanted to find out there and then and, if you’ve read this far successfully, then I guess you do too…
