Bit-tech launches new free Android app

The new bit-tech app is free to download, and has the same great features as before

We launched our first mobile app last month, a dedicated bit-tech site reader for Android phones. It aimed to make the site easy to read on the go, with has a host of mobile-focussed features.

While we were happy with the app's design and features, and decided to sell it as a paid download, priced at £1.79, a lot of you commented that you'd prefer a free, ad-supported version instead. This month, we're happy to announce just that. Today we're launching a new version of the app which is free to download, and like bit-tech itself, is ad-supported.

The new version of the app has all the same great features of the original version. That means it optimises the forums for easy use on your phone, thanks to Tapatalk integration, so you can keep up to date with the latest discussions as well as being able to join in and add your comments on news stories.

Combined with this of course, is touchscreen phone optimised navigation for the site from the same app. The app doesn't auto-load images to ensure articles load faster over 3G and to get to the stuff that matters even quicker, you can add sections of the site to your favourite list, or favourite individual articles if you want to come back to them quickly at a later point. As you'd expect it's easy to share bit-tech content via Facebook, Twitter, email and all the other social network services the cool kids are using these days. The app also features built-in support for the mighty bit-tech and CPC podcast.

The original bit-tech app will remain in the store for £1.79 for those of you who prefer to browse the site without adverts. If you've got an Android phone, please do check one or other of the bit-tech apps out, and if you like them, leave us a nice review. It's the best way for new people to discover the app and bit-tech content.

The new app is available for free in the Android marketplace now; please check it out and let us know what you think. We're keen to develop these apps, so your feedback will come in very handy.

I'll give it a try.

Kudos for allowing it to be moved from the phone to the SD card. It really bugs me when apps (mainly Google ones) don't let you do that, as my phone has very little internal space left.
Tim S 17th August 2011, 15:55 Quote
testing out the app... a few hiccups (took a few attempts to get the forums to load) but seems to work well. It'd be good if there was an option to view all articles in one stream as opposed to news/hardware/gaming/modding/bogs/etc
l3v1ck 17th August 2011, 15:59 Quote
Any chance of adding a "download" button as well as a "play" button to the Podcast section. It would be nice to download it as an MP3 to the SD card to play later rather than have to stream it. Obviously we can do that via the website, but via the app would be nice.

EDIT

Not that the "play" button actually does anything on my HTC Desire :(

This. I tend to browse the forums using the "New Posts" button, so it would greatly help if this could be added somehow.

Just need a WP7 version now ;-)
runadumb 17th August 2011, 16:06 Quote
Using the ad version right now. Any chance of giving custom PC subscribers the paid version for free? ;-) why is there no return key on my keyboard in this dialogue box? Sent from my xperia play

I second the motion for a WP7 app, although the site itself is more mobile friendly than most (anandtech is distinctly bad)

Ahh wonderful, thanks for this :)

Very nice, though I can't see the Marketplace - is that a bug, or by design?

Just takes some time to populate. It'll be there in a bit.

Thanks, will be downloading. The paid version was never going to take off.

Using the app now. Seems good. No sideways typing?
Fisher. 17th August 2011, 17:53 Quote
I am requesting landscape mode as well. My Droid2 has a slide-out keyboard, so basically all my typing is done on it. I can view the forums just fine in portrait, but unless this gets fixed I'll be a mostly silent observer.

Which some would say is a good thing

The new version was launched as a response to user feedback, and it features ads (we need to make money somehow, otherwise we'll be eating beans every meal and the Labs will stink).

Thanks for buying the app though, have some Rep!

This. If I want to listen to it on the bus, I'm screwed...

Also, not sure if this is related to the free version being released, but I can no longer access my paid-for version of the app. It starts to load then gives me the following error message

"Application not licensed - This application is not licensed. Please purchase it from the Android Market."

Then it links me to the Market, where it says I have purchased it. Anyone else have this?
mars-bar-man 17th August 2011, 20:21 Quote
I like it :) Runs nice and smoothly, it looks quite nice as well!
GregTheRotter 17th August 2011, 20:32 Quote

Thanks for all the suggestions and feedback on the app - keep them coming, we'd like to roll out new versions with added features in the future. A big part of that will be if the app is popular and the ads are working, so if you do like it, please leave us a nice review in the marketplace as it's the best way for people to find and discover the app and bit-tech content :)

app for wp7, please?
Unknownsock 18th August 2011, 09:54 Quote
Always found this site to be very well designed and easy to use (minus your built in site search).
This just doesn't keep up with those standards imo.

I'd rather see better compatibility with the pulse app.
outlawaol 18th August 2011, 10:05 Quote
Some good suggestions here. ;)

I'd like to add a few;
Image support - even if it hotlinks to a browser, cause at current it shows nothing useful.
sideways keyboard - my droid 2 and I hate that I cant read what I am typing.
Most recent posts option. I almost always exclusively browse fourms this way.
Number of threads to show concurrently, a setting or preference would be nice to adjust this.

I have the paid version and so far like it (would love it more with these minor issues fixed :D )

Yeah adding an image and more text to your RSS feeds would be a big help and make it look much nicer in Pulse ;-)
