We now know the reason why we couldn't get a Radeon X1800XT 256MB to compare to the two GeForce 7900 GTs yesterday, as ATI has decided to end the Radeon X1800XTs life in readiness for the launch of a new product coming soon.

The Inquirer believes that ATI is moving all of its high-end products to R580 with the launch of a new part called the Radeon X1900GT. They say that the Radeon X1900GT is designed to steal some of NVIDIA's GeForce 7900 GT sales.

This has to be the shortest product lifespan we've seen since NVIDIA's GeForce FX 5800-series that lasted less than four months. Radeon X1800XT was launched on October 5th, but wasn't available until November - that makes for a product life of just over five months.

The company has also lowered the price of the R520-based Radeon X1800GTO to fall closer in line with the GeForce 7600 GT, as it is now priced at the $199 mark - this should translate to a street price of under £150 in the UK. This means that ATI will get rid of its final R520 inventory on the Radeon X1800GTO cards.

The X1800XT 256MB looks to be selling for a great price at £170.32 including VAT on Overclockers UK. That looks like a damn good alternative if the GeForce 7900 GT doesn't tickle your taste buds. Thinking of buying one? Maybe you purchased one at launch - are you disappointed by this price hacking? Let us know your thoughts in the forums.
