Sony reports growth in PSN users

Sony has reported a growth in the number of PSN users since the security breach earlier this year.

Sony has revealed that the number of PlaySation Network users has increased by 3 million since the security breach the company suffered earlier this year.

Speaking at the IFA show in Berlin, Sony CEO Howard Stringer claimed that the PlayStation platform was now more popular and safer than it was before the breach.

I am pleased to tell you that the PSN is more secure and better than ever,’ said Stringer. ‘We are aggressively expanding its content. We have more that three million new customers since the network came back online, and sales are exceeding what we had before the cyberr attack.

Earlier this year Sony was attacked several times by hacking groups, with user details and credit card information compromised. Sony then came under intense scrutiny for failing to announce the extent of the security breach as quickly as possible and for not encrypting user data.

We at Sony have been flooded, we’ve been flattened, we’ve been hacked, we’ve been singed. But the summer of our discontent is behind us. The past is a prologue to future possibilities.

In real life terms how secure is it now? Because anything is better than what they had previously,

surely it's not so much popularity but more a lack of choice?

Wondering how they've managed to get more users when their registration site seems to be constantly down: https://store.playstation.com/accounts/register/beginNewAccountRegistrationFlow.action

Exactly. I'd say it's probably close to a 1:1 relationship to the number of Sony consoles sold...

I actually wonder how many people are using credit cards to purchase items off PSN

I'm almost entirely sure the metric they are using is total registered users. Oh look! It's constantly increasing! It must be more popular! :|

Could it be due to the fact people have had a PSN account for several years now on a old e-mail address they have deleted and forgot about. Thus the forgot password process is impossible for those in the UK to the point only a new account will do. God I have tried tried the phone lines and e-mails but I am not who I say I am to them :(

You can buy a PS3 and use it quite satisfactorily without having a PSN account so if people were worried they just wouldn't bother

Probably a load of people signing up so when the psn goes down again for a month they get some free stuff..

Good to see the hacking scandal doesn't seem to have had a lasting effect

Hopefully their security's a little tighter to stop stuff like that happening again so soon
