Far Cry 3 will introduce a new character, Jason Brody, who ends up stranded on a tropical island.
Ubisoft Entertainment has announced a new installment in the Far Cry series at E3 2011 in Los Angeles today, Far Cry 3.
Far Cry 3 is in development at Ubisoft's Montreal studio, though Ubisoft Shanghai and Massive Entertainment are also working on the title, which is currently set for a vague 2012 release.
In development for Xbox 360, PC and PlayStation 3, Far Cry 3 will introduce an entirely new character and story, just as Far Cry 2 did compared to the Crytek original.
The new story will see players take the role of Jason Brody, a man stranded on a mysterious tropical island '
lawlessness and violence are the only sure thing'.
Ubisoft is promising a large amount of player agency, with Brody able to '
slash, sneak and shoot [his] way across the island in a world that has lost all sense of morality'. Players will also be able to dictate how the story unfold.
Opinion is still divided regarding the last entry in the series,
Far Cry 2, but we still think it's a decent game despite some obvious issues. Craig Lager spoke in defence of the game in his feature
Far Cry 2 is Underappreciated.

just killed the story and game play for me I hope they learned their lesson!!!
but most importantly i hope they fix the retarded checkpoints, that miraculously/magically rebuilt themselves
including all the people, as soon as you move away or enter another building.
and the map although big, was empty, exploring was dull not to mention you couldn't actually explore a lot of places as they were inaccessible.
actually far-cry 2 was so full of faults it's probably best they change everything,
1. Brand recognition = increased sales.
2. Shared central philosophy - base building RTS in the case of Generals, open world shooter in the case of Far Cry.
incorrect, the farcry IP was retained by ubisoft when it was published and they kept it when Crytek moved over to EA.
Agreed
It can burn
Do these companies have any sort of user-feedback revision effort like that?
I'm with the "2 wasn't a disaster" brigade and feel that if some of the more egregious problems had been fixed, it had the makings of something really special.
It looks like they learned from some of their (many many many many (you get where this is going) many many many) mistakes.
Could turn out well.
But have they learned the definition of insanity? Only tiem will tell.
Guy stranded on tropical Island...
Umm... Been there done that... Where is the new story bit?
I'm full of hope! I loved first part, second never finished, took me a long time to get back on that two times, but never actually finished, for me was too much sand;) I prefer trees:D
So I'm very happy they taking it all back to tropical island. I'm sure graphics will be nice, all effects etc. I only hope story will be better and they won't make us to run or drive 1000s of miles just to finish some somall task, like it was in Far Cry 2.
For me the only dissapointment in Far Cry 1 were all the monsters at the end. So as long as they keep that new island short and full of action:)
Sorry just made me thin kof JC2.
Honestly gotta get round to hammering FC and FC2, got them on the Steam sales last week and haven't installed them yet *heresy* Tonights big plan!
If they can make FarCry3 with improved graphics of FarCry2 and the story and game play of FarCry1up to the stupid tank monsters then it will be an awesome game.
Graphically it'll be nice, that's pretty certain but if they use a similar formula to FC2 the story and gameplay will be abysmal... really I'd prefer it if Ubisoft passed the baton on to some other developer to take a swing at this.
How many times does it need to be stated: Far Cry = Crytek, who then went their separate ways to make Crysis!
Far Cry 2 is an unrelated developer using their own stories and engine.
Far Cry 3 will have most in common with Far Cry 2 since it is the same engine (you could tell from the graphics and the FLASHING GOLD guns in the distance...). It seems to be the same devs as the script seems to have the same style as FC2 had.
Wonder when the next Doom will be out....
"Did I ever tell you the definition of insanity?"
The very definition of insanity, from E3:):D:)

Not to mention everyone in that game is made of kevlar.
Yeah it wasn't as good as any of the Far Cry 1's ie on PC and Xbox and 360 which where just awesome but Far Cry 2 was a cool experience I thoroughly enjoyed it and found it better then the block buster games of now like CODs which i find good but vapid.
I still play some FarCry1 on pc via gog.com so this to me is a good announcement.
just mho
