Far Cry 3 announced

Far Cry 3 will introduce a new character, Jason Brody, who ends up stranded on a tropical island.

Ubisoft Entertainment has announced a new installment in the Far Cry series at E3 2011 in Los Angeles today, Far Cry 3.

Far Cry 3 is in development at Ubisoft's Montreal studio, though Ubisoft Shanghai and Massive Entertainment are also working on the title, which is currently set for a vague 2012 release.

In development for Xbox 360, PC and PlayStation 3, Far Cry 3 will introduce an entirely new character and story, just as Far Cry 2 did compared to the Crytek original.

The new story will see players take the role of Jason Brody, a man stranded on a mysterious tropical island 'lawlessness and violence are the only sure thing'.

Ubisoft is promising a large amount of player agency, with Brody able to 'slash, sneak and shoot [his] way across the island in a world that has lost all sense of morality'. Players will also be able to dictate how the story unfold.

Opinion is still divided regarding the last entry in the series, Far Cry 2, but we still think it's a decent game despite some obvious issues. Craig Lager spoke in defence of the game in his feature Far Cry 2 is Underappreciated.

^lol bit harsh!

however 'slash, sneak and shoot [his] way across the island in a world that has lost all sense of morality' sounds a lot like "everyone will open fire without question" which was one of the worst things about the last one!!!

far cry was brillant I loved it, but was totally disappointed in far cry 2 with all the missions and back tracking it
just killed the story and game play for me I hope they learned their lesson!!!

Seconded. As much as I hate to judge a game before it comes out.

Hey, look on the bright side - at least it can't be worse than FC2.........can it?

hopefully they will fix the so called "smart" NPC behaviour which in reality was more like a godlike ai, precision like aiming, being able to see you through cover and when driving always being able to somehow catch up.

but most importantly i hope they fix the retarded checkpoints, that miraculously/magically rebuilt themselves
including all the people, as soon as you move away or enter another building.

and the map although big, was empty, exploring was dull not to mention you couldn't actually explore a lot of places as they were inaccessible.

actually far-cry 2 was so full of faults it's probably best they change everything,

What's the point in incrementing the Far Cry title? None of the games are even tangentially related to each other!
Bede 7th June 2011, 00:15 Quote
For the same 2 reasons as the 'Command & Conquer' label was applied to Generals:

1. Brand recognition = increased sales.
2. Shared central philosophy - base building RTS in the case of Generals, open world shooter in the case of Far Cry.
Skiddywinks 7th June 2011, 00:34 Quote
Anything they dish out will be better than Farcry 2. No amount of "Far Cry 2 is Underappreciated" articles could possibly make that game any less gash.

I remember FC2 being incredibly fun for a while, I enjoyed clearing out most of Africa's population with my sniper rifle. Crytek makes great tech demos, but they completely suck at making games.

incorrect, the farcry IP was retained by ubisoft when it was published and they kept it when Crytek moved over to EA.

I actually liked Far Cry 2. It had it's faults but I still enjoyed it. I can only imagine all the complaints about Far Cry 2 will be fixed somehow for Far Cry 3.

I wonder if the people who are working on 3 ever bother perusing fora like this and noting what people didn't like about 2.

Do these companies have any sort of user-feedback revision effort like that?

I'm with the "2 wasn't a disaster" brigade and feel that if some of the more egregious problems had been fixed, it had the makings of something really special.

Just watched a gameplay video of this, and it actually looks pretty awesome. Kudos.

I was impressed with it, didn't have a clue what it was... then FarCry3 shows up on screen.
It looks like they learned from some of their (many many many many (you get where this is going) many many many) mistakes.
Could turn out well.
But have they learned the definition of insanity? Only tiem will tell.
SchizoFrog 7th June 2011, 04:36 Quote
I just love the quoted bullshit... 'New character and new story'...

Guy stranded on tropical Island...

Umm... Been there done that... Where is the new story bit?
SpAceman 7th June 2011, 06:10 Quote
Its hard to imagine they won't fix the AI, the checkpoints and the poor mission variance. If we consider these fixes alongside the things that were great in Far Cry 2 like the health and weapon systems and hugely variable options when it comes to executing missions, I think we could end up with a really good game.
DrTiCool 7th June 2011, 06:58 Quote
No implementation of co-op in FC2 ruined that game
l3v1ck 7th June 2011, 07:56 Quote
I still enjoy playing the original.
adam_bagpuss 7th June 2011, 08:29 Quote
but its a ubisoft game so i dont care how good the game is if its riddled with "always online" DRM i aint buying it

YAY! Third part coming!

I'm full of hope! I loved first part, second never finished, took me a long time to get back on that two times, but never actually finished, for me was too much sand;) I prefer trees:D
So I'm very happy they taking it all back to tropical island. I'm sure graphics will be nice, all effects etc. I only hope story will be better and they won't make us to run or drive 1000s of miles just to finish some somall task, like it was in Far Cry 2.
For me the only dissapointment in Far Cry 1 were all the monsters at the end. So as long as they keep that new island short and full of action:)

"'lawlessness and violence are the only sure thing'." Jusssttt Cause...

Sorry just made me thin kof JC2.

Honestly gotta get round to hammering FC and FC2, got them on the Steam sales last week and haven't installed them yet *heresy* Tonights big plan!

Far Cry 2. The only game were taking the bus was more fun than driving. That says it all really.

Necrow 7th June 2011, 09:31 Quote
Graphically FarCry2 was brilliant, but game play was terrible and boring. FarCry1 was an awesome game up to the huge tank type monsters with no weapons as it was like a bad game of chase.

If they can make FarCry3 with improved graphics of FarCry2 and the story and game play of FarCry1up to the stupid tank monsters then it will be an awesome game.
suenstar 7th June 2011, 09:57 Quote
My expectations are pretty low after Far Cry 2, I just don't feel Ubisoft are up to the task.
Graphically it'll be nice, that's pretty certain but if they use a similar formula to FC2 the story and gameplay will be abysmal... really I'd prefer it if Ubisoft passed the baton on to some other developer to take a swing at this.
Glix 7th June 2011, 12:09 Quote
Seriously some of the comments here...

How many times does it need to be stated: Far Cry = Crytek, who then went their separate ways to make Crysis!
Far Cry 2 is an unrelated developer using their own stories and engine.
Far Cry 3 will have most in common with Far Cry 2 since it is the same engine (you could tell from the graphics and the FLASHING GOLD guns in the distance...). It seems to be the same devs as the script seems to have the same style as FC2 had.
Tokukachi 7th June 2011, 15:23 Quote
I played the first half of Far Cry 2, (went to second area) then gave up. It it hadn't been for the re-spawning enemies, the stupid AI and weapon degradation (which has never been a good addition to a game ever) it would have been pretty good IMO. Lets hope they fix that for #3

Couldn't get into Far Cry 2. That Malaria or whatever it was thing just annoyed the hell out of me. It didn't impress me like Far Cry or Crysis did.

Wonder when the next Doom will be out....
OCJunkie 7th June 2011, 18:58 Quote
Far Cry 2, such love & hate; good graphics and open world gameplay killed by the incredibly stupid incurable malaria, instantly respawning guard points and the lack of mod tools to fix the issues just added insult to injury... but despite the issues I still enjoyed it. Now lets hope they learned their lesson.
phinix 9th June 2011, 23:04 Quote
FarCry3 looks very nice.

"Did I ever tell you the definition of insanity?"

The very definition of insanity, from E3:):D:)
Elton 10th June 2011, 01:43 Quote
Far Cry 2 wasn't necessarily terrible, it just had many missing and badly thought out options. For example, the exclusion of modding made it lose all the potential it had from the first one (they have fire mods for FC1 crazy huh?) and the fact that the world wasn't constructed very well in terms of thoughtfullness really made the game horribly unplayable when one plays for a long time.

Not to mention everyone in that game is made of kevlar.
corzair 13th June 2011, 06:30 Quote
haha funny comments I actually thought Far Cry 2, which i played on the Xbox360, was excellent!
Yeah it wasn't as good as any of the Far Cry 1's ie on PC and Xbox and 360 which where just awesome but Far Cry 2 was a cool experience I thoroughly enjoyed it and found it better then the block buster games of now like CODs which i find good but vapid.
I still play some FarCry1 on pc via so this to me is a good announcement.
just mho
Fizzban 13th June 2011, 11:40 Quote
So in other words they are going to try to emulate the 1st game, only it won't be as good. Oh joy :(
Elton 13th June 2011, 18:35 Quote
I won't deny that I enjoyed Far Cry 2, the only issue was finishing the game. It just became menial and tedious at one point because you were literally rinsing and repeating the same thing. They could've had a bit more variety in their gameplay but really what ended up happening was that the Ai was too omniscient and the chases just not engaging enough.
