Not content to let Nvidia have all the fun with Far Cry 3, AMD has officially launched a new beta version of its Catalyst driver package that promises to greatly improve performance for the game.
Like Nvidia's GeForce 310.64 Beta driver package, AMD's Catalyst 21.11 Beta 11 set boosts performance in Far Cry 3 when using the company's latest graphics cards. When combined with AMD Catalyst 12.11 CAP2, a claimed improvement of 25 per cent can be achieved using 8xMSAA and SSAO at a resolution of 1600p, while up to 15 per cent improve frame rates are possible when using HDAO at the same resolution. While it falls short of the claimed 'up to' 38 per cent improvement of Nvidia's driver package, it's still free performance for anyone hoping to bump up the graphical settings on the game a little.
The driver bundle also includes numerous bug fixes, including issues with freezing using a Radeon HD 7000-series card on X58 and X79 chipset motherboards, a potential hang when using CrossFire Eyefinity, image corruption in DirectX 9.0c titles, a problem with fonts failing to display in XBMC and fixes for Media Player Classic Home Cinema's floating point processing. Linux users, too, can benefit from the upgrade, receiving a fix for stability issues found in the Beta 8 release and a patch for Ubuntu 12.04 that fixes HDMI audio problems.
As usual, the driver package includes all of the updates from the previous beta releases including performance improvements for Max Payne 3, Planetside 2 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, as well as fixes for the Skyrim flickering lighting bug and crashes under Dishonored.
The beta packages, for Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista and Linux, can be downloaded from the official site now.
