PSN may stay offline until May 31

Sony has said that it may not 'restart PSN services fully' until May 31st.

A spokesperson for Sony Japan has said that the PlayStation Network may not return to full functionality until the end of the month following repeated attacks on Sony's online services.

Sony first took PSN offline on April 20th, shortly after it found out that the system had been compromised by an unknown party. Later attacks have bought the matter to Sony Online Entertainment's other services too.

PSN was originally supposed to have been restored on 3rd May, but that plan went out the window when the second SOE attacks were discovered.

Talking to Bloomberg today, a Sony spokesperson said that the company was still in the process of adopting improved security systems and was planning to restore PSN to full functionality by 31st May.

If Sony holds to that new date then PSN will have been offline for a total of 41 days.

This isn't going to kill anyone, but its pretty annoying for users of the PSN network.

Ouch. I don't own a ps3, (pc through and through) but everyone I know that does is riled enough as is. May the rage commence.

While I have some sympathy for the users, is it wrong that I can't help smiling at Sony's misfortune?

Yeah, buying the PS3 version of Portal 2 has turned out to be a *great* idea. :/

Am happy to sit this out until 31 may but if it turns out to be more lies from Sony then am deffo gonna start to rage big time.

Most of my chums are ps3 fanboys, I admit i own one but only use it as a media box, best thing for it imho.

It amuses me no end how much my mates are whining about the network being down when they're in the pub, somewhat ironic as they're only in the pub as the psn is down! Not only has their fitness increased by walking to the pub so has their social lives, I think there's a moral here somewhere!

Sony are damn lucky they put the BluRay player into the PS3, its the only thing that's desuading me from X-ing it in for an Xbox!

Going by Sony's past deadline failures i.e. GT5 and the PS3 itself I hold out little hope of the May 31st target date being met.

It's extremely annoying but having said that we seem to be forgetting one important thing... they've just had one of the most catastrophic natural disasters in modern history so it's possible it may take them a while to get their **** together =)

WTF am I saying... pull yer finger out and get my PSN back Mutha Lickas!!!! Peace! Out!

On the plus side we should get 2 free games (probably minis from the store) from a choice of 5 and PSP users get 2 from a choice of 4

I got hold of Portal 2 free, only to play it on PC originally. However, as I couldn't do the steam/psn thing, I went ahead and tbh, rather enjoyed playing it on PS3. The fact that it had been made with joypad in mind (thankfully - the thought of accelerating through successive portals was a constant worry) made it play beautifully.

Unfortunately, my mrs can't get the hang of using one thumb to 'go' and another to change the view/direction so I can't do co-op (despite my best efforts solo).

I enjoyed P2 on my PS3, despite the PSN being down. As it isn't a twitch shooter, it was quite relaxing being able to chill on the sofa and play on the big screen. I do like my PS3 (well, both of them), and the PSN being down is a pain, especially as I can't activate my Steam copy.

The crowing from 'hardcore' PC gamers is also a bit annoying. I play more than my fair share of PC games, but no point being a dick about it!

I do understand why people are getting so frustrated but do you really want sony to rush back online and then the same thing happen again?
NO i dont think so.
Give sony the time they need to fix this problem otherwise it WILL happen again.
Its a gaming console, not the end of the world.
To all you people that are saying "screw sony i'm getting an xbox" i say screw you if you are that sad that u need to buy another console just so u can play games online.
I'm support sony all the way, you wanna moan at someone? Moan at the hackers.

Console-gaming is something I do, when I've invited friends over for a beer etc, so I don't really care about PSN being down or not.

Consoles are a casual offline-thingy imho.

I thought it strange that, when I popped my GOW3 disc in last night for the first time, that it 'downloaded' and updated the game to 1.03.

same, I game on the PC primarily, but friends arrive we are all on the consoles, lol, but on the upside my friends on are on xbox live though. well atleast sony learned its lesson and is patching up

Going to come right out with and say...

Never really played online or enjoyed it particularly, so no effected here, in the slightest.

Sucks for those who are effected though. PC gaming has been more rewarding than console gaming for me recently. In fact, the PS3 is only for the big exclusives now + blu-ray.

Me too :) but being able to demo the latest games without the need to buy a mag was nice though, since it's been pushed back virtually a full month I can see this being a huge problem for sony, holy moly they p'd off hackers it seems :D, I mainly got the ps3 for some exclusives once there was enough to justify buying one & still don't regret it :).
BakedRooster 9th May 2011, 17:40 Quote
This is misinformation, if you got the full news from sony yes full functionality won't be back till the end of the month but they are in the final stages of testing they will be bring the online gaming back first which will be sometime soon and then by the end of the month things like the playstation store will be back on.
yooperboogs 9th May 2011, 18:36 Quote
The only thing that makes me mad about this is I bought Portal 2 for PS3 expecting to be able to play it on PC also and come to find out my steam account has to be linked with my PSN account and I can't do that with PSN down. This won't deter me away from using PSN when it does come back online. PS3 FOREVER!
Lankius Maximus 9th May 2011, 19:37 Quote
I think the most surprising result of this is how little I have actually missed using my PS3.

In fact will be in no rush to return to it when it gets resolved.

General apathy must be bit of a concern for Sony.

I dusted of Team Fortress 2 and Battlefield 2 on my PC and I couldn't be happier,

wow Im torn part of me is like HA HA HA HA HA *points finger at sony* but then the other part is like wow that sucks for PS3 users but man am I glad Im a PC user, I have all the same functionality as the PS3 and more and I dont have to rely on some network like the PS3 to be functional. :)

Same as everyone really, don't enjoy playing against winey kids so I don't MP on PSN, but it was nice to try out demos.

As for ever buying anything off it when/if it ever comes back up....lolz no way :)

Regardless of it being Sony or why the attack is happening. I'm amazed that the network will be down for 40 days due to an attack. Seriously, in the networking industry thats a stupidly large amount of time. Hell, even after the Japan earthquake, we had our stuff sorted out and working within the week, even working around the exclusion zone.

I can only think that Sony have the worst implemented security systems known to mankind, or they've done the old:

"we need this fixed"
"well, we can have it up tomorrow is money isn't an issue"
"errr, is there a budget option?"
Haphestus 10th May 2011, 16:34 Quote
The PSN network was never implemented properly (ultra slow downloads without a proxy server and laggy as **** streaming.) CBA to comment on latency .............to many!"!

I believe this was a bunch of disgruntled IT chaps who had the most IMBA of rage's against PSN to destroy version 1.0 and provide the catalyst for version 2.0.......... a thought anyway :D

This really sucks!! I thought waiting til May 31st was way too long especially being a PLUS MEMBER for gaming but now my Netflix has gone to crap on the PS3 and it just tells me that it cannot connect to the PSN duh!

I wanted to upgrade from my older model PS3 to the newer and bigger hard drive PS3 but I may not go that route now... possibly an Xbox in my future!
edenofth3east 13th May 2011, 05:25 Quote
OK, Sony owe us a game at the least for this BS!

Picking up LA Noire on friday and will not be able to use the pre order bonus code as a result, much like my MK9 online pass code.
I do not blame sony for this, I just hope this does not happen again in the future, and hey anon cannot be the only hacker community out there, but they may have been partly responsible for the service being compromised.
