Many Mass Effect games planned for the future

Bioware has said it has many Mass Effect games planned for the future and won't stop at just a trilogy of games.

Bioware co-founder Dr. Greg Zeschuck has confirmed that Bioware and Electronic Arts have plans to continue expanding the Mass Effect universe even once the planned trilogy of games is completed.

Mass Effect 2 is due for release next week and will be followed by a third game that will complete the original story plans, but Bioware is keen to make the most of the well-established franchise and create many more games in the series.

"We're actually going to continue to use it for stuff and we're going to continue to make games there," Zeschuck told Kotaku.

"Believe me, we have our work cut out for us for the next little while getting Mass Effect 3 done after this. Don't worry if you love Mass Effect, [because] there will be more Mass Effect in the future."

Mass Effect 2 will continue the story of Commander Shepherd, super space-spy, as he hunts down a race of sentient machines beyond the edge of the galaxy. The second game in the series carries over a good portion of the story elements from the first game, should you have a savegame to carry over, and Zeschuck says that Mass Effect 3 will be the same.

"Some of the decisions you made in 1 you'll see the result in 3," he said. "There will be stuff that you will feel is yours that you've created in that third iteration."

You can look forward to our Mass Effect 2 review next week, but until then let us know your thoughts in the forums and hope that future Mass Effect games are better than that terrible iPhone spin-off.

A Mass Effect MMO? Or maybe spin off games where you are not playing as Shepard?

if they make an MMO I hope they don't dumb down the guns blazing action

Not a good thing imo, If they create new games in the same game world then fair enough, but dont start another endless EA sequel fest

Endless sequels would suck. Spinoffs, on the other hand, would rock. ME universe RTS? Mass Effect Online?

Oh yes.

I must say that although i fear these multiple ME games getting EA's kiss of the Sims i do like the idea that previous decisions in the series will affect your current game. This would have to be a feature that you can toggle and should you not want it you should be able to start with a paladin/renegade prone character should you wish to try things another way without starting a new character.

They could easily make a pure shooter game in the ME universe.

An EVE style MMO perhaps?
An RTS for a war between the races, perhaps prequels for previous wars?

just how long can they keep that up for and still have the results genuinely diffrent? just how much code are they willing to program that won't ever get used by more than the three people who replay it all to get all six trillion possible endings?

or is it all just going to be slight variations in the way they string together the words around the action, until they reach Steven Hawking levels of voice acting over identical cutscenes.....

I vote for a Freelancer style Mass Effect game.

We need a greater debate on this, so that we can all go home and say we had a good 'Mass' debate.

ha, it takes the piss that Razor have released Mass Effect 2 already while if you buy it on Steam it says: Available: 29 January 2010
This game will unlock in approximately 1 week, and 1 hour

I think they should unlock it now as a thank you to people who are actually buying it!

I still need to play the first after buying it in the Steam Christmas sale.

Yeah the base is definitely there and I've always been a big fan of franchises expanding. They just have to be careful early on with how they expand the world and very careful not to muddy it with poor games. Heck this could be the next star wars... or just die out after a few years depending on how it's done.

And with the acquisition by EA my money's on the latter...

I don't think the spin offs are such a good idea. Even if they were to create another trilogy 1000 years in the future, surely decisions such as killing off the council in ME1 would have some affect on how the universe looks even that far ahead.

They could make a prequel shooter, or one of another character running parallel with Shepherd, where the events are set in stone. An FPS in that universe could be pretty amazing, but I'm not sure that I'd want Bioware to make it.
