Modern Warfare 2 PC player limit slashed

Modern Warfare 2 PC player limit slashed

Infinity Ward has waited until the last minute to reveal that the PC version will now only support 18 players.

Infinity Ward has waited until the last minute to reveal another snippet of information that will likely dismay PC gamers who are otherwise looking forward to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 - this time involving the player count.

While previous PC games in the Call of Duty franchise have supported 32 players, the new version will fall in line with the console version and support only 18 players.

The comments came in a Best Buy Live Chat (via Eurogamer), where Infinity Ward's Mackey McCandlish confirmed that the maximum player count for online matches has been slashed.

According to Infinity Ward a cap of 18 players makes the game much easier to balance when it comes to map sizes, perks, classes and challenges.

The fact that it makes map sizes easier to balance is an important point, as the introduction of IWNet means there will no longer be user generated content for the game - so no huge maps.

Many PC gamers are feeling increasingly neglected by Infinity Ward judging by comments in our forums, with the developer clamping down on dedicated servers, user mods and now player counts too - though Infinity Ward says it's all for the best.

The game itself launches on November 10th, but until then you can let us know your thoughts in the forums.

Pah, completely lost interest in this title for the PC. Cutting off the entire community's creativity is like putting 9000 howitzer bullets into your head and wondering if you'll survive... it's craziness. Bets that they'll reverse all these decisions within 6 months?

Because outsourcing COD worked so very well the last few times, right? If even IW can't do it right anymore, then i'd prefer if the franchise was killed off alltogether.

If this truely ends up being a bad game, why should we have to not buy it for them to realise that? Perhaps they should listen more to the people they are trying to sell it to. In the console vs. PC argument, PC gamers whine a hell of a lot more than console gamers.

PC gamers whine more over here because Bit has (understandably) a PC focused community head over to the console forums it makes /b/ look positively sensible.

The standard Console Tax of course, we Pc gamers always pay our Window Tax in advance ;)

Personally I like the take on unique PC functionality: Not only does the PC version support the ability to change video resolutions, it also comes with mouse AND keyboard support! Though rumour has it that keyboard support will actually involve the purchase of additional DLC ;)

Instead of canceling your pre-orders you should all start to donate to a fund (use paypal maybe?), and gather up enough savings to buy the franchise from IW.
That's the only way this game is ever going to be done right, by the gaming community.

As this seems to be a direct console port in everyway (Lazy Ba$tards) tomorrow's news will be that the PC version is capped to 720p resolution :(

Seeings how it seems to be identical to the console version maybe they will let PC players compete with consoles in multiplayer which might be the only redeeming feature as we get to own them all, the 3 PC owners that will have actually purchased the game that is.

I smell Activisions hand on this. IW used to be a pretty together PC developer, and having spoken with some of the team personally, they definitely seemed to want to support the plattform.

But from Activision's point, boiling everything down to a "Single Feature Parity SKU" probably looks nice on some balance sheet somewhere.

At least cross plattform play then? I mean, if you want to make it the identical experience on both plattforms, save for the control interface, then this an ideal title for that...

Battlefield Bad Company 2just got a huge Shot in the arm. They could capitalize huge on this one. But it's DICE under EA, and their track record is less then comforting. The irony is that not too long ago people would have easily believed that BC2 would make this changes before MW2.

metarinka 5th November 2009, 20:24 Quote
everyone is making a big deal about nothing.

in multiplayer fps' developers usually limit the player cap as a design consideration. The original cap in the half life engine is 32 players if I remember correctly. Counter strike lowered this cap to 24 or 20 IIRC. Not because of technology but because of game design.

an 18 player cap is still pretty high and I've found that in most multiplayer fps after that lag becomes an issue OR games become steam rollers when a few good people work together on one side. If the developer thought an 18 player cap was alright I'm fine by it.

going back to the above while CS did have a high player cap, it wasn't all that fun to play with 20+ people it became a zoo. Same thing happened in BF2. I don't expect it to be any different here.

I cancelled my pre-order and I'm going to phone everyone I know who may buy this game and offer to burn them a warez copy because developers who piss all over the community that has supported from day one deserve to go bankrupt.

Unfortunatley the world is full of plebs who will still buy this game and it will still be a massive success :(

Greetings!

Sorry for the double post, but this is related to MW2.

D2D, Impulse and GamersGate refuse to sell MW2 due to the inclusion of SteamWorks:

May be 60 Euros but he's right, it's £35 for us, not £53.

When I graduated from College 8 years ago and got a real job, I said "Alright, I'm not a broke ass student or a kid anymore, its time to support the game industry I love. From now on, buy the game, or not. No piracy" And it worked wonderfully. When Steam arrived, it worked even better because I only had to go to one place to install all my games. COD:4 single player rocked, and I enjoyed the multiplayer for a while (before I went back to BF2 again :) ). And I was looking forward to MW2 in hopes the singleplayer would be good, and I could get my money's worth on the multiplayer. now it sounds like the singleplayer is the only potential good thing about it. I don't want to play 9v9 on a tiny map! That's why I went back to BF2 (32v32 ftw). I will be voting with my wallet on this one. I'll be waiting until I can buy it used at Gamestop so Infinity Ward won't make a cent off me. What IW is doing to PC gamers is shameful and lazy business practices. I will not advocate pirating a game ever, but this is very tempting...

So yet.. another game ****ed for PC? Sorry for my swearing.

but.. in modern warfare are you seriously saying they built those maps for 64 players? That's bulls**t,

The Dev's have just got lazy and don't want to build the maps any bigger, it doesn't take long. just expand it out. and copy + paste a few more buildings and you will have at least 10k happy people. willing to buy this game! just because you took a extra 10 minutes into building the maps a bit bigger!,

8v8? WTF is going on here?, sure console games 8v8, maybe 20 people max for the xbox 360 , ps3 because they will run like crap if anymore people join, but PC come on? WTF is the point of playing a game with 9 players in?

Don't get me wrong but the best thing i like about COD4 is Team Death match with 40 people in it, Gives you a Challenge,

TBH. i don't think i will be buying this game anymore, not after all the **** they have ripped out of the PC version. just because they are lazy, this is a big down fall for PC. most gamers like alot of players in servers!

Still a day till release what else are they gonna rip out of it before it goes on sale?

Sorry but you have messed up a truly great game!

baddiE out!

It seems to me this is going to be a self-fulfilling prophecy - IW don't want to make PC games any more because no-one buys them, so they make a game no-one will buy?

if they dont want to make pc games whats the point of even starting it on PC?

why not just spend the money they used to produce this game to make the 360 / PS3 Version better with more functions than COD4? not take away functions!

They complain about not getting money from games.. but who the f**k is gonna buy a **** game?

insted of ripping out all the good features, and putting it some other shitty things, and then lowering the player cap,if they just redone MW but put in a few new game modes, new weapons, new perks, and maybe a new feature like maybe being able to run and slide or somthing, everyone would be happy!

MW 2 haked news up date

MW 2 haked

Now, it’s not this blog’s intention to post every little bit of gaming news (or is it?), but this is a more signal event than all the PR out there. Modern Warfare 2 for the PC, which infamously lacks dedicated servers, a console, the ability to kick players, and other things integral to a good PC game. Infinity Ward, maddeningly apathetic to the needs and requests of their users, has said that no changes to the stated areas are forthcoming.

Well, you can’t keep a good PC gamer down. Certain cracks already allow some online play, and now the console has been enabled, allowing players to kick, change POV and FOV, and presumably do most of the stuff Infinity Ward decided had to stay in the cookie jar. Tut tut, developers. You didn’t see this coming? You could have made it easier on yourselves, but instead you turned a whole segment of your market against you.
