BioShock 2 details emerge

BioShock 2 is confirmed to feature Big Sisters and a return to the underwater city of Rapture.

Details have begun to emerge on the upcoming BioShock 2, sequel to the critically acclaimed spiritual successor to System Shock 2, including the confirmation that the game will return to the underwater city of Rapture.

The new details on the much-anticipated game were dropped in an investors call held by Take-Two today, but will be further elaborated on in the April edition of American games magazine Game Informer, according to Joystiq.

According to early reports BioShock 2 will definitely be set back in Rapture, the same ramshackle submarine city from the first game. It's not yet been confirmed whether the game will be set after the first game or if it'll act as a prequel though.

Among some of the other details is the unveil of a new character type which Take-Two hopes will be the equivalent of the iconic Big Daddy from the first game, dubbed Big Sisters. The Big Sisters are apparently more streamlined, polished and agile versions of the Big Daddies, who likewise have a very close connection to the little sisters.

Some of the news is sure to disappoint fans of the first game who may have hoped that Bioshock 2 would further expand the fictional universe and feature new environments - but we'll hold our own opinions in check until we get to take a look at the game.

What do you think of the idea of revisiting Rapture? Let us know your thoughts in the forums.

Hot damn.
Can't wait!
(Although I was so sure it was going to be a prequel :o)

Whoops - I've had to update the article there. Turns out I mis-read the source and it hasn't been confirmed if it's a sequel or prequel. Sorry for the confusion! :o

really, really excited for this!

Typically, most games assume the 'good' ending. :P
I'm guessing this assumes you saved all the little sisters.
Or perhaps that you saved all but one.

On another note, what if it's chronologically a sequel but unrelated to the plot of the first?

EDIT:

If Big Sisters are the new Big Daddy then I assume it's a sequal. Unless they went with the creation of Rapture and it's opening day, then you get caught in it's downfall.

Squweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!

Pretty cool viral site that's to do with BS2 if anyone fancies a bit of indulgence in the fiction:

...just finished Fallout3 last week (well the main storyline anyway) so it's time to install Bioshock (yes I still haven't played it till now)

Maybe I can finish it in time for the Sequel (or Prequel or whatever) to arrive.
Quote perplekks45 11th March 2009, 13:27
I really hope it is a prequel set in the last days of Rapture's decay.
Quote harveypooka 11th March 2009, 13:44
Fantastic news.

Will be new environments? Or at radically changed, if time has passed? Or Rapture but populated...oooooo....
Quote Ta10n 11th March 2009, 14:45
I can only hope that they open up the levels a bit this time. Frankly I wasn't all that impressed by BioShock (could be because I had finished a run through of Deus Ex prior to playing it). Even though all the 360 players were yelling about it's awesomeness from the rooftops.

The art style was refreshing, but the enemy design and behavior made it too much of a lol fest for me. Weird looking people running at me with lead pipes vs. an arm full of bees.

The WTF meter friggin esploded....
Quote Zurechial 11th March 2009, 15:16
Meh, I bought Bioshock on steam when it had fallen as low as €20 and I still felt cheated - Totally overhyped by the console crowd who've never experienced Deus Ex and System Shock.
Can't say that I'm excited about a sequel/prequel.

Would you kindly...

Looking forward to this! :)

i only came around to playing/finishing Bioshock about a month ago, and i loved it, so im defiinitely looking forward to Bioshock 2
itll be interesting to see if they change a lot of the scenery and what not..

I'm looking forward to it. You can't have Bioshock without Rapture City.

That would be like taking the Halo Worlds from the Halo Series.

Looking good just really hoping its a prequel giving us a better idea about Rapture and expanding the story, loved the story of the first, they better not ruin it.

But all judgements shall be held until i play the acctual game.

I bought BioShock when it was 5.00 on Steam, played for like a few hours and never went back, visually great but game play was horrible so I hope that BS2 will be better
Quote War-Rasta 11th March 2009, 18:54
I bought Bioshock a couple of weeks and am totally hooked on it. I love the scenery and the story. Sure a lot of things don't make much sense, like countless recordings from everybody in the city lying around everywhere but then again it's still a game so we should expect a few things to not be as real so that the story and gameplay will work better.

I can't wait for Bioshock 2 and I hope it's a sequel (if it's not then it probably won't be called Bioshock 2 though) but I also fancy the thought of a prequel based on the last days of Rapture's decay as perplekks45 said.

Loved Bioshock, so I'll wait patiently for this one too.

The range of cultural and artistic references in Bioshock is incredible, making it much more than a simple "art-deco FPS RPG".

There are references to ancient Greek culture - the myth of Prometheus, the names of several locations in Rapture. Anyone who's read Collin Rowe's "Collage city" can draw parallels between Rapture and several architectural utopias of late 19th - early 20th century (these utopic ideas go beyond architecture, they imply idealised models of man itself).

The bits with Cohen made me wonder how it would be like to know Salvador Dali, or Picasso. The notion of religion, the insuficiency of rationality are concepts inspired by Freud's and Kant's writings.

All these and many other ideas are there, waiting to impress themselves upon you, if you'll only listen close enough...
Quote Elton 11th March 2009, 20:22
I like Bioshock alot, especially Cohen and his insane but yet perfectly done works of "art".

Hell I even have the soundtrack.

And + 1 to Chicorasia, you have to know a bit of everything to get Rapture and why it's built.
Quote benjamyn 11th March 2009, 20:25
Big sisters?

Pfft... Big Momma's woulda been so much cooler ;)

So this game is about fat nuns on the beach?
Quote fargo 11th March 2009, 21:36
I loved rapture and the graphics except for backtracking it played pretty well and I've got the sequil on my list. but much to my surprise no mention here about the hasle with secrom and BS2
Quote Nicb 11th March 2009, 23:20
I liked the under water, retro look, the story, I played it many times even as torturous as it was. I kept saying to my self...... "everybody seems to like it, if I keep playing it, I will too." But nope. I cant stand playing that game. Maybe I'll like this one.
Quote Gunblade 12th March 2009, 01:39
I was kinda tripped up about the fact that we return to rapture (did it not get destroyed?). I guess the formula worked last time why not for round two! Typical sequel thinking so far at least..... but I can't wait for more info and the finished product.

This time it's personal - I left my wallet back in rapture. haha

Awesomesause! I'll be booking time off work for this badboy..
Quote Bauul 12th March 2009, 09:38
Bioshock is one of those games I honestly can't see where an FPS fan is coming from when they say they don't like it. Might not think it was brilliant, fine, but honestly not like the game at all? Baffles me.

I thought it was truly fantastic, really sucked you in. It had such a strong fiction about it, far above the vast majority of FPS games. Recently, I'd say only Stalker topped it for atmosphere. And those blasted Houdini Splicers scared the bejesus out of me.

And no, Rapture wasn't destroyed. You simply left the city taking the little sisters with you. Cue seven years later, Rapture's after some replacements.
Quote perplekks45 12th March 2009, 11:41
Just started playing Dead Space and it feels a bit like BioShock meets Doom3... awesome! :)
Only problem I have is that my graphics card is basically dead. Crashes every now and then [or more often]...
Really have to get my mother to send BioShock to England so I can play it again.

you nailed it bro!!!

I think that the people who didn't enjoy this game weren't actually paying attention to it. Bioshock wasn't the average FPS... There were no videos, no cut-scenes, no tutorials... The game revealed itself as you play it. People expecting a mindless frag fest were certainly disappointed

Now, if you check out the somethinginthesea.com website you'll know that the game is not a prequel! First, all the dates reference to 1967, That's 7 years after the events of the first game. Then, based on the assumption that the developers chose the good ending, Rapture will be out of little sisters to harvest ADAM. If anyone down there wanted to continue harvesting ADAM, then he (Andy Ryan???) will need more little girls. And the ones who survived will now be the Big Sisters... Finally the new Big Daddies look more like and enhanced version of the previous ones..

But, you killed everyone that you encountered, so there would be no one left to harvest adam for. Unless they open up a completely new part of Rapture that we havent seen yet. This is assuming that it is a sequel though.
