Far Cry now available for free

Far Cry now available for free

The full version of Far Cry is now available for download in an ad-supported form.

I've had a mixed history with Far Cry. When it first came out, I enjoyed the first few levels but quickly got bored with it and discarded it in an envious rage when I saw how much better it ran on my friends computer. Later, when I came back to the game with a new GPU, I enjoyed it throughly, loving the sandbox approach and what is arguably one of the most fun sniper rifles in any game, ever.

If you still haven't got around to playing one of the defining games of recent years however, or if you just don't know what the hell I'm talking about, then now is your chance. FilePlanet is offering a full version of the game to download for free.

On release, Far Cry was a massive hit, striking out of the blue with gorgeous graphics and stunning level design. The game drew critiscism in later levels however for being incredibly difficult and have a laughable story. Regardless of plot problems though, the game has gone down as a modern classic and pushed the developers to geeky stardom.

The downloadable version of the game is ad-supported, which is a bit of a hassle, but when you're getting a game of this quality for free you can't really complain. The only real problem is that the filesize is close to three gigabytes, which means you may have to leave it downloading for a few days and pray that you don't lose your internets.

Still, it is free.

While the original developers have sinced moved on to a new IP which you may have heard about, Ubisoft still owns the rights to the Far Cry series and is hard at work on a sequel. So, which has you most excited; Crysis or Far Cry 2? Let us know in the forums.

Nice idea. they should release more games like this. free but ad supported. If nothing else, it would definitely cut down on piracy. Ugh, but damn the free FP wait time ;)
will. 3rd September 2007, 12:16 Quote
How do the adds work then? In game banners, or the game pauses and a monkey informs you that MacDonald's are doing a 2 for 1 deal on chicken nuggets?

I think it's on loading screens and in the menu
Bauul 3rd September 2007, 12:21 Quote
Lol, I do remember Far Cry on your old PC Joe, it looked... retro. ;)

You're right about the difficulty. I remember eventually getting bored of forever dying and getting a trainer that gavr you infinite health, but still recorded the number of times you would have died, had you been playing it normally.

Death count at the end of the final level? At least 900 if I recall correctly. Yeah, it was too hard. One of the examples of why the most recent trend of infinite health, but still a risk involved techniques (ala CoD 2, or Bioshock) work so very, very well IMO.

It's one of the first FPSs I ever played, and I really was wowed by the graphics, and...

and they're probably also doing this to stir up interest in support of the "movie", if they still are having Uwe make it.
Bauul 3rd September 2007, 12:31 Quote
Of course they'll get Uwe in: the German tax breaks and 'artistic grants' he gets means even if the film totally flops, he'll make a profit even if only a few thousand people go to see it. It's a win / win situation for everyone.

Well, apart from the movie going public.

The original c&c is now available for free also! But the bad thing is, that it is not TCP/IP but still IPX, That mean a lot of users wont get to play this wonderfull piece of history. espacialy vista and xp64 users..

Finally. All I need now is a PC!

Does anyone know of a mirror for the file? Fileplanet sucks, can't use dTa on Firefox with the link, and my last download just stopped abruptly. Dumb.

Ah never mind, just found it on Gamershell, usually get good download speeds from there too.

I bought it, and played 10mins then took it back to game. Great in those days when Game would allow you take back opened PC games no questions asked for PC.

game didnt run well on my PC back then so couldnt play it properly.

Yep, but apparently if you set your location on your Ubi account to US, it works. Gonna give it a go just now - my download just finished.

Use this link, blazingly quick download speeds (was getting 700-800KB/sec on mine):

I love Far Cry. I remember playing it on my old PC with my Radeon 9200 SE and almost wanting to gouge out my eyeballs. But because the game was soooo good I kept playing. Finally after getting my 9600XT was I able to turn on some of the eye candy and really start enjoying how good the graphics were.

Now my new PC can run it at some ridiculous frame rate with all the eye candy on now and the game is still a blast to play.

The last level in the Volcano was awesome. I died probably close to 100 times but damn it I never had to cheat. I almost did. I was really close. But I didn't. I killed (no name used to protect spoiler in case a few haven't beat it) with a grenade and watched him fly out the little room he's in.

I am excited for Crysis. It's the reason I built my new PC. I know it won't run it maxed out, but it should run with good settings at a reasonable frame rate with no problems :) Far Cry 2 looks awesome as well. Just got my new PC Gamer a few days ago and the preview looks awesome :w00t:

I don't get the "hard" criticism.

The only encounter I find even vaguely taxing is the exit from the regulator into a courtyard full of V22-resupplied mercenaries - and even that's not too bad if you know to knock off the four guys near the door and take the V22s out with rockets before they can drop off their passengers.

Was a bit silly of a story but a very cool game - the Best action movie I've ever played through

I'm really excited to play Crisis. The only thing I'm worried about is the 10 hours of game play, it's a bit low. FarCry 2 looks absolutely amazing, and the AI sounds great too. I might be looking forward to FarCry 2 more than Crysis...
wafflesomd 3rd September 2007, 15:53 Quote
If you guy want to get rid of the ads, gameburnworld.com, thats all I'm saying.

Anyways, this was one of my all time favorite fps'. It's easily the hardest one to date. Me and my friend have been going at it for years, seeing who could get the fastest completion on realistic.
completemadness 3rd September 2007, 16:14 Quote
ubisoft have released quite a few ad supported games

Prince of Persia SoT, Rayman Raving Rabbids and GRAW atleast

But i read you had to be in the US to play them ?
CardJoe 3rd September 2007, 16:30 Quote
Yeah, just lie about it.

Sands of Time is the best game on the list - utterly awesome in scope, if you can get past some of the harder arena battles. The last one in particular had me tearing my hair out, but I was so entrenched in the story by that point that I didn't care.

As for those saying they didn't find it hard, well I struggle to believe that those people played it all the way through or that they played on anythign other than easy/normal difficulty. The approach to the volcano and from there on in is very, very difficult though before that isn't that hard if you know what you're doing.
Kipman725 3rd September 2007, 16:54 Quote
hmm I was fine with farcry untill the very last level which was imposible, there simply wasn't enough ammo to take out that manny things even with almost full acuracy, I have no idea how your ment to do it, I personly used god mode for the last little bit. Good game though there is nothing like it in openess but I have no idea why they put those boring cave missions in the middle in.

This is the only situation where I "support" in-game advertising. Support isn't quite the right word, but neither is tolerate. If it lowers or removes the cost of the game, good. If it's just more money coming in while I'm still paying full price, that's just crap.

Simply create a new account on the Ubisoft website, and choose US[A] as your country

Then enjoy all those free games ;)

It's a shame that I didn't stumble on this earlier, as I'd have deleted the "without ads" thing. I put that pretty much equal to discussing piracy how-to.

Do you SERIOUSLY mean to tell me that you feel SO entitled to steal someone's work that you won't even watch a couple adverts to get it for free? I don't know if there is a word for how appalled I am. You can't bother to spend not even $10, but you can't bother to watch a few ads on the loadup screens.

Ugh. It's reasons like this that no company does this stuff.

Sorry for the rant, but that is just pathetic IMHO.

I just shows that you cant please everyone. I think those that moan about ads in paid for games and also moan in free games, are just looking for a moan because thats all they do. Grumpy old men with nothing else to do

Its free dam it. Expect to put up with some adverts.
CardJoe 4th September 2007, 16:47 Quote
If the adverts impacted on the gameplay and The Prince of Persias sword was sponsored by Nike then I'd whinge too, and pay for the full game. As it is, they don't. You have to see an advert in a loading screen which you'd never pay attention to anyway. The Prince of Persia is intact from a gameplay point, which is all I care about.

By ditching the adverts, all you're doing is harming the industry further. It's people like you that EA lives for. For shame.

I think the issue people have, is the way that they've done it
It would actually be quite easy to put ad's in the game without seriously affecting game play

but putting ad's in every loading screen, for like a minute, is a really sucky way of doing it

Oh well
BTW, i heard this is USA only - is this true ?

how on Earth is it "sucky"? Ingame would ruin it because they'd have to place ads in on monkeys.

Loading screens and menus are perfect as it doesn't alter the Game in any way!
CardJoe 5th September 2007, 22:50 Quote
It's USA only, but you can get around that very easily by claiming to be in the US. The game only has adverts on the load screens, which last the normal amount of time.

As long as its tastefully done, I don't care about the adverts. Nobody whinges about Aston Martin or Sony sponsoring James Bond to get him to use their car and laptop because the advert fits in with the game.

I whinge about Sony sponsoring it, it was OTT they hung on the badges and logos for far too long, in old bond movies it was wide shots, no zoom on the logos.

I don't know about anyone else but I don't like seeing an entire cinema screen of "Ford" or "Sony"
