The Church calls for Japanese allies

The Church of England has appealed to Japan to support the protest against Resistance: Fall of Man.

The battle raging between Sony and The Church of England over the inclusion of Manchester Cathedral in the PS3 exclusive title, Resistance: Fall of Man just leapt across half the world in its attempts to stay in the media spotlight.

The Church of England, outraged that Sony would include Manchester Cathedral in such a violent game, has been trying to gather support for its cause. Support is needed too, especially after the legal route appeared to have been taken away from it.

While the Church already has the support of UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, it seems keen to gather allies from further afield.

Speaking yesterday, the Very Rev. Rogers Govender, the Dean of Manchester Cathedral, had the following comment to make:

"Today I want to appeal directly to the people of Japan to help us put pressure on Sony to respond. So I speak directly to those citizens who share our concerns."

The appeal seems to have incensed some members of the media however, who imply that the comment may be based on faulty, stereotypical impressions of Japan;

"Sure, Sony's headquarters is in Tokyo, but Sony's a multi-national corporation, and the game was made in America by Americans. What do Japanese people, who aren't typically Christian, have to do with this?"

Whether based on stereotypes or not, the impression among gamers - even established anti-Sony gamers - seems to indicate that the Church of England is fighting an uphill battle with the public, though what the 'normal', non-geeky hordes think about it all is perhaps another issue altogether.

Think the Church of England will ever get the 'large donation' it has been asking for? Will the game be pulled from shelves across the UK, despite already selling a million copies? Is Jesus going to come down and bitch-slap Sony personally? If you like making your opinions on these matters publicly known then get to the forums.

Is Joe currently on 24 hour Church of England watch? Forum discussions getting complicated with about 4 or 5 threads on pretty much the same story.

no way!!!!!! this is becoming even more circus like.
Quote thermalnightmare47 14th June 2007, 12:48
wow this is getting really sad recently they know on a legal standpoint they've lost so they will try to use their power to persuade sony to donate to them otherwise because we all know the church needs more money and attention

Stop giving the story more air time than it deserves.

Church of England ... Japan. Yes, I see the point.

This is just a silly, petty, I mean come on where else do u get do blow a church up but in a virtual world, no one gets hurt for real Mr.Blair (boy I cannot wait till that T**T steps down).

If the church had anything to do with video games industry they would be like the ones Rod & Todd play in The Simpsons.....LOL
Quote Duste 14th June 2007, 13:50
Get over it already, sheesh. They're just trying to get a big donation in their pockets - they have no grounds to actually stand on now and that's why they're resorting to the public.

I don't think that Tony Blair gave his support, all he gave were a few non sequiturs about social responsibility and profit.

The CoE has already lost the argument by making it out to be a much bigger problem than it really is. Too many column inches, not enough story.

No, don't be silly!

Jesus is a zombie [i.e., dead --> come back to life = zombie], so he'll rise from the earth, remove an arm and then bitch-slap Sony...

This game is not that offensive. If Blair's pissed, Ban the game and some entertainment freedoms of English citizens (although he can't afford to do anything wrong at this stage in his career).

The Church of England should merely counter with an Xbox 360 game entitled: Resistance , the fall of morales, showing something something with stuff.

i really dont get this, why is he asking for support from japan? and saying that they are typically not Christian, arnt the two main religions there Buddhism and Christianity?
Quote gar 14th June 2007, 23:09
Oh, I thought it was because the Japanese make games for Sony, or make most of the games as such. I would have thought that having Japanese support would prove useful in stopping games like these and not just having a model of the Church of Enlgand in a game. TBH I probably don't know enough about this, but I'm just throwing the idea out there.
Quote sinizterguy 14th June 2007, 23:38
Basically they are clutching at straws. Support from Japan ... Indeed.

Shooting in mosques, shooting in temples are allowed but not churches?
Quote CardJoe 15th June 2007, 09:17
Shooting in churches is allowed, the Church just gets whiny. I'm sure the Rabbis would get pissed if it happened in a synagogue and the muslim priests would get annoyed if it happened in a mosque. They probably have in the past too, but an institution formed of mainly white middle class men? The mass media listens to that a lot more than they will to minority groups.
Quote Dazmeister 15th June 2007, 09:45
Very true. Its certainly as if the Church are running out of things to do. Enveloping the nation of japan in on this seems like a last hand tactic. I really dont see where the japanese public comes into this at all, and more importantly, why the Church are even taking it as far as this.

Its hardly like every individual contributes into the game content developed by Sony...

Rubbish, these days the mass media laughs at middle class white men. They’re the one group of people who the media can lampoon without being classed racist, sexist, or ageist.

Muslim protests have grabbed more media attention of late than the church could ever hope to create, at least in the uk. When other religions protest of late the government has sat up and examined the issues, or theatres have withdrawn plays, noticeably because these religions tend to represent minority races and where not allowed to upset them for fear of being branded racist. But when the church protests it’s a case of "awhh the poor deluded people, give them a sec and they'll go to sleep again".
