StarCraft 2 confirmed, kind of

Blizzards announcement of a new StarCraft title has fanboys frothing at the mouth in excitement

Blizzard is a on a hot-streak lately and no sooner has the massively addictive World of Warcraft finished taking over the minds of RPG geeks worldwide, but Blizzard has now announced a new StarCraft title is in the works.

Rumours of a sequel to StarCraft have been circulating on the interwebs for a while now, with a lot of the hub-bub coming out of Korea. In an attempt to find out for sure what's happening with the title Kotaku recently contacted Blizzard, who gave the following quote:

"We do intend to announce a new product at the Worldwide Invitational next month in Korea, and we appreciate the enthusiasm and interest in getting an advance look at what that will be, but players will have to wait until May 19th to find out more. Also, we have a very strong connection with the characters and settings of StarCraft, and we do plan to revisit that universe at some point in the future, but we don't have anything new to announce in that regard at present."

So, there is a definite plan for a StarCraft sequel at some point, even if exact dates and plans are still lacking.

Korean websites seem to have a bit more information though and are declaring that StarCraft 2 will feature a new playable race and drastic changes to existing units.

Fanboys worldwide hope that the upcoming announcement will relate to the StarCraft franchise and will deliver more details. The fact that the announcement is being made in Korea would certainly make sense considering that Korea has a strong connection to the series and have turned it into a televised national past-time.

Reckon the new StarCraft could possibly be better than the original, or are you cautiously dubious on the whole thing? Let us know in the forums.

Still no confirmed release yet :( I am a bit somewhat dubious about the next Starcraft but at the same time I look very much forward to it, am a large fan of the original Starcraft:Broodwars and play it still to this day, so have been egarly awaiting Starcraft 2, like many other fans out there!

In the mean time I heard about the Project Revolution a couple of years ago, which is a Starcraft:Broodwars mod for the Warcraft 3:Frozen Throne eninge, produced by some hardcore fans of Starcraft.

This mod I also look very forward to playing, with the game based on the orignal Broodwar maps and scenarios.

Aye likewise, but this is Blizzard and unlike EA, they rarely let there fans down.

Just don't forget the long time blizzard record of delaying games for years. People don't remember it much these days with WoW out, but before that every game blizz produced would be delayed over and over.

SC Ghost was planned to make a bridge between SC and SC2.

Can't wait till May 19th. Ironically it's the day I graduate, so I guess it's a double-yay day for me :D

wow, i remember when there were "leaks" about 2-3 years ago about SC2 starting production. they turned out to be rumors, hope this isnt the same as back then.

Dude, StarCraft is one sweet game, and if a sequel comes out (with better graphics), I'd definitely play it a LOT!

i still love Starcraft.. god knows how many days i spent playing those games in highschool... now, coming from *indonesia, i know for a fact that a good 7~10 years ago when i left highschool, there'r MILLIONS of players still competing professionally in local events..... and we'r talking a near-3rd-world-country....
