Obsidian: Aliens RPG is cancelled

Obsidian has finally confirmed that the unnamed Alien RPG has been well and truly cancelled.

Obsidian has confirmed once and for all that Sega has cancelled the RPG the studio had been working on, which would have been based on the Aliens franchise.

The unnamed Alien RPG was the third Alien game in development that Sega was set to publish, with Gearbox working on Aliens: Colonial Marines and Rebellion handling a new Alien vs. Predator. Both of those titles are still doing fine and are planned for release on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2010.

Speaking on the official forums though, an Obsidian spokesperson put an end to the rumours and confirmed that the Alien RPG had been totally cancelled.

"Unfortunately, it is true that we are no longer working on the game, and we wanted to finally announce that officially to everyone who has been following its development... it is no longer a product that is in development," he said.

Sega later confirmed the news in a statement that claimed the cancellation was the best thing for the franchise.

"At this point, SEGA has no plans to move forward with the Aliens RPG. The Aliens franchise offers us so much content to choose from that we feel it important to take a step back and carefully consider the type of game we want to release," the statement read.

Obviously the only type of game that Sega feels meshes with the franchise is an FPS then, but do you agree? Let us know your thoughts in the forums.

I love Alien.
I love RPG's.

This could have been done well, but as always FPS's are usually what rake the money in.

I imagine it would have been a FPRPG along the lines of Deus Ex, which is a shame cos I love games like that.

Damn shame, this could have been really quite something. Fingers crossed the others don't end up the same way.

This could have been great, but I don't blame them. Alien is a big brand, but not so big as so you can just slap any old genre on it and expect it to sell. The big-budget shooter gameplay is much safer and, to be honest, much flashier and has more potential for tension and horror. Obsidian are not exactly known for their technical excellence, and the Alien films are arguably successful because of technical excellence. They simply may not have been able to deliver the same kind of experience within the confines of an RPG (though to be fair, I would expect Obsidian to be able to, if anyone could).

maybe we can build a campfire sing a couple of songs? how about that!

on a more serious note it is rather bad but mind you no-one has yet to do a good aliens franchise game which is a load of rubbish as the whole aliens has plenty of potental.
