Supreme Commander will be available on the Xbox 360 early next year.

THQ has confirmed that one of the best PC games of 2006, Supreme Commander – the Epic RTS from Gas Powered Games – is coming to the Xbox 360.

This news comes after Gas Powered Games’ founder, Chris Taylor, hinted last month that the franchise was heading to the consoles.

It’s hard to argue against the fact that Supreme Commander was one of the best, if not the best strategy game to hit the PC last year and consequently it has been a favourite in the bit-tech offices ever since its release. The title was probably only second to Company of Heroes, which won bit-tech’s game of the year last year.

Despite this though, it’s really hard to say the two were truly comparable as they offered quite different takes on the genre.

The Xbox 360 version of SupCom will feature a whole host of new features that weren’t in the PC version, meaning it might offer some replayability for those that were big fans of the PC version. These include a bunch of new units, some new multiplayer modes along with a selection of updated maps. Additionally, the game will feature “the most epic hostilities ever seen in an RTS game.”

Gas Powered Games expects to complete the port, with help from Hellbent Games, early in 2008 and the game will reportedly be published by Aspyr.

I’m still of the opinion that RTS games don’t work that well with a joypad and are more naturally suited to the PC, but the same could be said for first-person shooters. However, given the massive influx of RTS and FPS titles onto the consoles, along with my love of BioShock on the Xbox 360, you could say the barrier isn’t quite what it used to be.

Do you think that RTS games work well on consoles and do you think the X360 version of SupCom will be as good as the PC version? Let us know your thoughts in the forums.

The part that I dont like is that the 360 will be getting more units and maps. Why not just release them in a patch for the pc users? We already bought the game.
I assume that pc vs 360 wont be possible, since the games will be slightly different.

I didn't think Microsoft allowed it, technically it is possible though

there's also no Live support in SupCom, so I doubt they'd be able to have cross-platform multiplayer.

Well there is no doubt the 360 is more than capable to handle SC however without the keyboard and mouse controls it won't be the same experience.

i guess we see alot more RROD (red ring of death) as Sup com is very cpu/gpu heavy game

I disagree. This game will happily eat up 2 gig of ram in a skirmish. How is the 512mb ram 360 going to cope?

The 360 has a completely different method of holding tasks during swap and thus doesn't need as much RAM as a PC, it's one of the reasons that consoles are faster to load games and can generally do the same as fairly mid-high spec machines.

Having seen the videos of Halo Wars for 360, I can only hope they invoke a similar menu control scheme (button down and stick movement to select an option), as that's the only way I can really see it working.

This game really doesn't interest me, Halo Wars on the other hand...

Strategy really isn't my thing so it'll have to be mind blowing for me to spend money on it.

Not sure how SupCom will be any fun at all on a controller...Starcraft for Nintendo 64 worked out so well :D

Apparently C&C 3 worked quite well on the 360, though I'm still a little sceptical, especially when SupCom needs so many fast mouse movements to whizz across the screen attempting to stop your horde of planes going on a suicide mission.
