The classic BSOD strikes out at OS X users.
One of the features Mac users like to tout most frequently is how simple OS X is - how easy it is to install and use without hardware or software issues or conflicts. But OS X 10.5, more commonly known as Leopard, which was just released
just three days ago, is spawning all sorts of installation problems for users.
One of the frequent problems is, after the installation process has apparently completed and the system prompts users to reboot the system, their machines will
fail to fully boot and will display only a blank blue screen. Users have reported waiting multiple hours for the screen to resolve, but to no avail.
Many users have contacted Apple both
on its forums and via phone support. Neither source can yet provide a solution. Possibly more frustrating is the fact that Apple’s phone bank is being flooded with calls, causing wait times of over an hour before representatives become available.
The issue isn’t limited to a single type of system, users have reported the same issue on all types of Apple hardware. The only thing Apple has
announced concerning the problem is that it could be caused by third party “enhancement” software that’s not compatible with Leopard. Many sources have focused this to software released by
Unsanity that allows users to customize all settings in OS X. However, users that don’t have the Unsanity software installed have also reported the blue screen issue, so a specific trigger is unknown at this point.
The only solution that has arisen so far is to format the partition and perform a complete reinstall of Leopard, but obviously this isn’t an ideal fix. Many users have reported not backing up their data before upgrading (
FOOLS! - Ed), and it's unknown whether the failed install corrupts the existing data on the drive or not.
Does a blue screen of death bring back warm memories of hair-pulling and frustration, or are you currently trying to resolve this particular problem on your own system? Let us know
over in the forums.
Also you need a space between 'and' + 'Apple' as it says andApple at the mo...
But anyone who doesn't back up data before installing a whole new OS is kind of asking for it, as much as I realize that macs are supposed to appeal to a lower common denominator and all. Hell, there's a brain-dead easy backup function built right into Tiger...
Karma's a b*tch
Yeah i can really see the pirates contacting apple for help.
"Apple please help i stole you software and now it doesn't work."
Oh well, now no OS is "perfect" and everybody knows it.
The only thing to hickup was iTunes after updating itself, so that got killed pretty quickly
Well I think I will stick to my perfectly installed and running vista ultimate system thanks. No Blue(textless) screens of death for me since my vista install.
What goes around, comes around.
Now who's System is running smoothly, and who's isn't? xD
But it shows that situation is less than black and white. Nobody is perfect.
Hey PC, great news! I get an OS upgrade today.. you know one of those things that makes us better, more features and more secure.. you know.. all the things you have alot of trouble with.
Well her it goes, see you on the other side, but better!
*After a few seconds, mac goes into a blank stare, falling onto its back*
PC: MEDIC!
----------------
Hehe... silly mac users!
It should be noted that all the crashes have been for people who do upgrades instead of fresh installs. Moral of the story: NEVER USE AN OS UPGRADE!
It's like blaming Vista because Creative, Nvidia et al were too slow off the mark.
*goes on MSN to mock a apple fan of mine*
LOL ownage.
It had an elegant way of crashing; just a message saying that the install had failed. The Apple installer was running fine and I could use all features including the repair disk unlike Mr PC who when fails, fails with an almighty crash, reboot ha.
hrm another ignorant windows user :( if you had read anything you would have known its not apples fault at all, its those who installed a GUI extension and then just simply upgraded there OS. I will stand by mac always, and I know its so much better at windows in almost everything(eccept the lack of games)
i have upgraded most of my computers from XP to vista without a problem. some of them have been running 24/7 without the need for reboots. seems like Apple users are just not used to being fault tolerant. us Microsoft users are used to formatting our windows partitions and starting over when weird things happen so we backup our data frequently it seems like the tables have turned. :D:D:D:D:D
oh yeah
Did you also read the part of the write-up that said it's not only because of APE and people without that software have experienced the issue also? Do you also know that 99% of the problems with like this with Windows are because of 3rd party apps and nothing to do with Windows its self. Just because the OS maker didn't write the software, doesn't stop anyone from blaming them. In fact, it's become an everyday thing for mac users to bash PC's because people install stupid stuff and don't know why their computer stopped working, so they blame MS.
you can't play Crysis, World in Conflict, or Bioshock on your Mac with a 8800GTX can you?
basically, you spent the similar amount of money for a 8800GTX machine, but gets a Mac that lacks power, and don't have a lot of non-EA games to choose from.
i think i'll take Vista and Dx10 anyway :P
Hmmm... apple-tinted spectacles? That looks like a tiny subset of recent popular games. No Valve games? Bethesda games? No EA sports? Footy sims?
Oh? Do you have stats to back this up? Since the vast majority of PC games aren't ported, I'd hardly say 'better' qualifies.
Macs are great for some things, but lets not get carried away.
Wow, not one EA game.
Hrmm... yet another grammar/spelling ignorant fanboy. I like how the people in the Apple Support forums thread are freaking out like all hell has broken lose; the one thing that some Windows users definitely have on the majority of Mac users is the ability to troubleshoot their own systems. I wonder how many Mac-heads pee'd themselves after seeing the blue screen... :P
That said, I really take no side in this Mac vs. PC argument. All I have to point out is that both operating systems have their triumphs and their flaws; to say that one was better than the other would be like saying that a truck is better than a sports car (or vis versa). While both are automobiles (or computers, for that matter), they don't really serve the same purposes.
So you really take no side? Look at the rest of the interwebs and IT press and see how much of a stir Vista caused. And how many Windows user do you think "pee'd themselves" because of a situation on their computer they couldn't handle.
Percentage-wise there are just as many super users on the mac platform as on the pc and there are just as many that know no more than how to use a word processor and their browser.
Your metaphor doesn't really work. Both OSes pretty much serve the same purpose so it's more like two Toyota owners arguing whether or nor their color of Prius is the best, comparing stupid facts about lead contents of the paint, heating from sunlight etc. One of the cars might even have a media player hanging from the neck rest while the other has a simple car stereo.
If you look at how platform independent 99% of all users needs are then you'll understand that modern operating systems, even Ubuntu, will suffice. Then it's no longer a question of the name of the OS, but how intuitive it is to work with and whether or not you like the look of the hardware that you have to have in your living room. Which clearly explains why Apple is still gaining momentum.
Microsoft has with Vista tried to create a more intuitive OS and to some degree succeeded, but then tey go and shoot their own foot with UAC. Microsoft really wants this interest segment of intuitive computing but they always seem to mess it up somewhere along the lines.
And by the way it's pretty useless to say PC vs. mac since all macs are PCs today. If it's mac vs. pc then what if you are running linux?
Guys! Broaden your horizon :)
Anyhoo not had my mac crash yet :) but then it came pre-installed with the lovelyness of leopard :D.
Tbh im sitting on the fence i have a mac and a PC best of both worlds saying that i've not used my PC since i got my mac [go figure]
