The full version of Far Cry is now available for download in an ad-supported form.
I've had a mixed history with
Far Cry. When it first came out, I enjoyed the first few levels but quickly got bored with it and discarded it in an envious rage when I saw how much better it ran on my friends computer. Later, when I came back to the game with a new GPU, I enjoyed it throughly, loving the sandbox approach and what is arguably one of the most fun sniper rifles in any game, ever.
If you still haven't got around to playing one of the defining games of recent years however, or if you just don't know what the hell I'm talking about, then now is your chance. FilePlanet is offering a
full version of the game to download for free.
On release,
Far Cry was a massive hit, striking out of the blue with gorgeous graphics and stunning level design. The game drew critiscism in later levels however for being incredibly difficult and have a laughable story. Regardless of plot problems though, the game has gone down as a modern classic and pushed the developers to geeky stardom.
The downloadable version of the game is ad-supported, which is a bit of a hassle, but when you're getting a game of this quality for free you can't really complain. The only real problem is that the filesize is close to three gigabytes, which means you may have to leave it downloading for a few days and pray that you don't lose your internets.
Still, it
is free.
While the original developers have sinced moved on to
a new IP which you may have heard about, Ubisoft still owns the rights to the
Far Cry series and is hard at work on a sequel. So, which has you most excited;
Crysis or
Far Cry 2? Let us know in
the forums.
You're right about the difficulty. I remember eventually getting bored of forever dying and getting a trainer that gavr you infinite health, but still recorded the number of times you would have died, had you been playing it normally.
Death count at the end of the final level? At least 900 if I recall correctly. Yeah, it was too hard. One of the examples of why the most recent trend of infinite health, but still a risk involved techniques (ala CoD 2, or Bioshock) work so very, very well IMO.
you can even shoot the fish in the water ;)
Just like the redneck I am
Well, apart from the movie going public.
Ah never mind, just found it on Gamershell, usually get good download speeds from there too.
Well thats handy, as i dont have an account, or live in the US.
Oh, and i don't like fileplanet either.

Still more fun than Doom 3 though...
game didnt run well on my PC back then so couldnt play it properly.
You can also Get GTA 1 and 2 for free from rockstar. They dont have ads because I downloaded them a year ago. Dont know if this link still works because its blocked here at work
www.rockstargames.com/classics/
Use this link, blazingly quick download speeds (was getting 700-800KB/sec on mine):

Now my new PC can run it at some ridiculous frame rate with all the eye candy on now and the game is still a blast to play.
The last level in the Volcano was awesome. I died probably close to 100 times but damn it I never had to cheat. I almost did. I was really close. But I didn't. I killed (no name used to protect spoiler in case a few haven't beat it) with a grenade and watched him fly out the little room he's in.
I am excited for Crysis. It's the reason I built my new PC. I know it won't run it maxed out, but it should run with good settings at a reasonable frame rate with no problems :) Far Cry 2 looks awesome as well. Just got my new PC Gamer a few days ago and the preview looks awesome :w00t:
The only encounter I find even vaguely taxing is the exit from the regulator into a courtyard full of V22-resupplied mercenaries - and even that's not too bad if you know to knock off the four guys near the door and take the V22s out with rockets before they can drop off their passengers.

Was a bit silly of a story but a very cool game - the Best action movie I've ever played through
Anyways, this was one of my all time favorite fps'. It's easily the hardest one to date. Me and my friend have been going at it for years, seeing who could get the fastest completion on realistic.
Prince of Persia SoT, Rayman Raving Rabbids and GRAW atleast
But i read you had to be in the US to play them ?
Sands of Time is the best game on the list - utterly awesome in scope, if you can get past some of the harder arena battles. The last one in particular had me tearing my hair out, but I was so entrenched in the story by that point that I didn't care.
As for those saying they didn't find it hard, well I struggle to believe that those people played it all the way through or that they played on anythign other than easy/normal difficulty. The approach to the volcano and from there on in is very, very difficult though before that isn't that hard if you know what you're doing.
Glad i didn't waste my time DLing then, ah well.
It's scary because you really are talking to me. Downloading now - just finished Bioshock, need something else to fill the void for a few days.
pew pew.
There have been 2 posts explaining how to get rid of them...
It's free, go waste your money.
That's what I thought initially as well... but a wise friend on another forum advised me how to get around it!
Simply create a new account on the Ubisoft website, and choose US[A] as your country
Then enjoy all those free games ;)
um?
numpty
Do you SERIOUSLY mean to tell me that you feel SO entitled to steal someone's work that you won't even watch a couple adverts to get it for free? I don't know if there is a word for how appalled I am. You can't bother to spend not even $10, but you can't bother to watch a few ads on the loadup screens.
Ugh. It's reasons like this that no company does this stuff.
Sorry for the rant, but that is just pathetic IMHO.
Fully agree, I almost posted something in response but it would have been full of bad words...
I just shows that you cant please everyone. I think those that moan about ads in paid for games and also moan in free games, are just looking for a moan because thats all they do. Grumpy old men with nothing else to do
Its free dam it. Expect to put up with some adverts.
By ditching the adverts, all you're doing is harming the industry further. It's people like you that EA lives for. For shame.
But still, it was free.
rawr huh?
It would actually be quite easy to put ad's in the game without seriously affecting game play
but putting ad's in every loading screen, for like a minute, is a really sucky way of doing it
Oh well
BTW, i heard this is USA only - is this true ?
how on Earth is it "sucky"? Ingame would ruin it because they'd have to place ads in on monkeys.
Loading screens and menus are perfect as it doesn't alter the Game in any way!
As long as its tastefully done, I don't care about the adverts. Nobody whinges about Aston Martin or Sony sponsoring James Bond to get him to use their car and laptop because the advert fits in with the game.
I whinge about Sony sponsoring it, it was OTT they hung on the badges and logos for far too long, in old bond movies it was wide shots, no zoom on the logos.
I don't know about anyone else but I don't like seeing an entire cinema screen of "Ford" or "Sony"
Still says i have to be in USA to play :(
So i deleted the setup files and unzipped again just incase. Still wont work.
Is anyone else using vista trying this?
but if you still got problems find some one who is on AOL or Sky broadband (UK) as thay get USA IP numbers norm
-- edit
ok thay have removed the ads from the game now and its asking for an CD key now when i click on Mutiplayer how lame ish, i guess thay worked out alot of none US users was playing it as well (time to use an Proxy then maybe if i can be bothered)
game still lets me use it
Ok, so here's the email that I just received from Ubi.
Crap, I was at 89% when I read that post, ah well
