No Unreal Tournament 3 demo on the PlayStation 3? I'll show you what I think of that!
Unreal Tournament is a great series, is it not? I spent many, many hours of my first year at University playing the games over and over - jumping around with a flak cannon was an excellent way to avoid going to lectures.
However, good games are hard to make and
UT3 is no exception. Even though Epic has got someone else to do all the physics (sorry,
Physx), it's still taking a long time to make the game. The plus side of all that hard work is a game which will hopefully pull us all back into multiplayer gaming bliss. The down side is that there won't be a PS3 demo of the game before hand.
Yeah, as a PC gamer I didn't think that new was all that bad either.
Speaking to
Eurogamer, Mark Rein, the head honcho of Epic, let slip that there won't be a console demo of the game and managed to show how cool Epic is at the same time.
"What we told Microsoft last year — they wanted a demo for Gears of War and we said 'you've got a choice — you can have the demo this year or the game this year'... We're not a big huge company with the resources to do that, and all the time we're testing that demo we're not testing our full game, which we need to be doing constantly... We'll have a PC demo for UT, [but] I don't think we'll have a PS3 demo before the game ships."
I tell you, that Mark Rein guy is so cool; not only did he tell Microsoft to get lost with all those crazy 'demo' ideas, now he's telling it to Sony too. What a guy!
As
Kotaku points out though, it begs the question; if Epic can't manage to churn out one demo level for a game which has been in production as long as
UT3, how could it possibly ever handle Unreal Engine developer support for
other companies?
If you know the answer, or just want to rub your PC demo in the face of all those PS3 owners then let us know in
the forums.
anyway.. i'm happy about... i'll always prefer the pc over consoles.
Infact the only owner it doesn't suck to be is a Wii owner unless you're some kinda retard and throw the remote through your TV.....
Sad and true.
Franchises like UT and Doom tend to sell regardless, so I don't think a demo coming out a month or two after the game ships is really going to hurt sales all that much.
I LOLed :)
many things, you have to create the demo from unfinished code, but still have to provide a working game thats not going to put people off, the final game might still be awaiting quite a few optimizations and somethings like AI might not yet be nailed down, also rather than supply gigabytes of data you want to make sure the package is as lean as possible, using only the needed textures, levels and other game data, this requires people to sort this out, then it needs testing and validation, this all takes time and people to do.
A demo is not simple on any platform.
I wonder if they'll include all the old UT2004 levels with the new UT as well? Requring... 12 CDs to install. :)
*puts his hand up :(
BUT... if you purchased the UT2003, then you could purchase the UT2004 at a discounted price, I think it was by sending off some form and getting a voucher in return ??? I forget exactly, but I recall I was pissed I could have done so, after purchasing UT2004
With Blu-Ray they could probably fit it all on one disc. But nooooo people kept saying "There's no need for Blu-Ray on a console, they're just trying force their format on you, games fit just fine on a DVD9" yeah right DVD9 is already showing its age and its only gonna get worse. As far as the demo goes I don't care all that much, I'm sure the game is gonna be great regardless. I would've liked a demo but like I said, it wont put me off from picking up the game as soon as it comes out. One more great game for my PS3 collection. lol;)
i was a bit pissed i couldn't get it cheaper because I'm in the UK, bloody epic
But UT2k4 was still an awesome game, and I'm eagerly awaiting UT3 - demo or not :D
If not it's barely worth getting out of the PC chair to think about buying
I dont have a PS3 :)
In my opinion, reading about the game is usually enough to garner the interest in me to check it out. I usually don't even have these "Xbox Live/PSN/WiiConnect" set up anyways.
Just release the game earlier I say. People can wait!
Yes it does, cross platform play has not been comfirmed though.

Btw, PC players only have a demo cause it's downloadable and it's what the programmers use to make the game and they use the demo release to tweak further the game bugs once 300.000 peoples send them in when encountered
Thanks - id rather not watch it then install QT
