To End All Wars promises to bring an authentic WWI experience to console gamers in summer of 2008.
I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm frankly very glad that the new
Call of Duty game,
Modern Warfare, is
confirmed to feature a modern-day setting. The whole World War II setting was great at first but it's been getting a little predictable as the market is swamped with
Nazi-slaying stories.
Still, game developer Kuju may revitalise the war theme just yet by placing a game in a WWI setting.
Announced today,
To End All Wars is to be developed by the Chemistry Studio, a new division of the main Kuju company, and will be published by Ghostlight.
Running on the Unreal 3 Engine, the game is currently set for release in summer of 2008 on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 and according to the press release will have a new and wholly different focus to games like
Call of Duty 2;
"...experience the gritty combat in the trenches, the fear of charging across no man's land, deadly secret excursions to enemy outposts in the dead of night and the heart stopping terror of pounding artillery guns will be central to the gaming experience."
"By blending Kuju's specialism on Unreal Engine with this great theme we've created a new & exciting formula for an amazing game experience that brings to life the visceral and demanding struggle that was The Great War" said Studio Head, Simeon Pashley in a press statement.
According to the developers,
To End All Wars will focus on being starkly realistic, which could be a very good or very bad thing. Hopefully the game will be able to build a unique gameplay feel by developing on the stark differences between The Great War and The Second World War, such as the focus on trench warfare and suicidal charges in true Blackadder-esque fashion.
Is it wrong to derive entertainment from real-life atrocities? Do we really need another war-based shooter? Answer these and other questions in the
community discussions.
I think there's still plenty to do in WWII yet too - what about a proper submarine sim (one that's better than silent hunter)? Most bits of the war have been done briefly, but it'd be nice to have a game where you can do things properly tbh, how about invading Poland? I'd like to see more Axis-based games tbh, the Allied sides have been done to death.
But in WWI the had bayonets, and an awful lot usage of them. How'd they do that?
H.B.
WWII will remain my favourite conflict of all time.
But what the hell..
A game based on the movie Red Dawn would be very cool if done successfully.
