The Mini-Dream, Can It Be True?
Power, elegance and speed to rival the biggest and best gaming PCs on the market. Introducing the Prodigy GT.
In today’s technological society we virtually always think small, but somehow not when we think of Gaming PCs. For some reason we feel the need to avail ourselves of the most angry looking behemoth of a case we can find to house our monster graphics cards and cooling systems. When everything else is getting smaller, with the exception of displays and - for the same reason - mobile phones, why shouldn’t the Gaming PC?
The reason for this was simple, before now small form factor cases had pretty terrible cooling, no room for high end graphics cards or large heatsinks and motherboard manufacturers thought that Mini ITX was only for Home Theatre PCs or the like. Well not anymore.
Recently there has been an explosion of Mini ITX products which, when carefully chosen and assembled, can produce powerful Gaming PCs on a scale far smaller and elegant than the plastic monoliths we have been used to.
Here at Fierce PC we believe that small is the future, which is why we’ve designed the customisable Prodigy GT Gaming PC. This amazingly powerful mini Gaming PC is based on two main components, the Bitfenix Prodigy Gaming Case and the Gigabyte Z77N-WIFI Mini ITX motherboard. The choice to go with these base components was easy for the following reasons.
The elegant Bitfenix Prodigy Gaming Case has the space to house graphics cards up to 320mm in length and the ability to keep them cool. We have chosen to use the GTX 670 in the case as we believe it provides the best value for money versus performance. The case comes with a 120mm fan at the front and one at the rear which is fine for our set-up, but there is space for three more if required. There is also ample room for liquid processor cooling, such as the Thermaltake Water 2.0 Performer which we use in the Prodigy GT Gaming PC.
The Gigabyte Z77N-WIFI Mini ITX motherboard is priced superbly well when you consider the all the features it offers. This board is a good £50 cheaper than the similarly spec’d Asus P8Z77-I DELUXE and still allows overclocking up to 4.2GHz. Add to this built in WIFI, Bluetooth, USB 3.0 and Gigabytes superb UEFI DualBIOS™ Technology and you just can’t go wrong. Being a socket 1155 board it opens up the world of Intel, which is a firm favourite with hardcore gamers. Pair the Z77N-WIFI with the Intel i5 3570K overclocked to 4.2GHz and you’ve got a mini-monster at an eye poppingly low price. It’s not just snapping at the heels of the clunking giants we’re used to, it’s taken their foot off and is ready for more!
To top off this little beast, we’ve added a SATA3 240GB Solid State drive and 16GB of 1600MHz RAM. If you’ve still not tried a solid state drive you really don’t know what you’re missing. With massively improved boot times and smoother game play they turn the Prodigy GT Gaming PC into a real speed demon. When you combine all these components with our careful attention to cable management and tuning, you get the mini-dream.
