Gaming peripherals company Cougar has announced the impending launch of a new gaming keyboard and mouse, dubbed the 450K and 450M respectively.

The Cougar 450K is designed for those tempted by a mechanical keyboard but who can't justify the price-tag. Based on a 'hybrid-mechanical' design, the keyboard uses inserts over the traditional rubber-dome which offer a similar tactile feedback to mechanical switches but at a lower production cost. There's an added bonus, too: because the circuit is entirely covered by the rubber membrane, the keyboard is splash-proof.

The engine driving the keyboard offers six-key roll-over - allowing you to press up to six keys simultaneously before further inputs are ignored - a far cry from the unlimited roll-over offered by high-end true mechanicals. A backlighting system offers a choice of three colours, while on-board memory stores up to three configuration profiles set up by the bundled Cougar UIX software - including the chosen settings of its ten independently-programmable keys.

The Cougar 450M, meanwhile, is based around a 5,000dpi optical sensor with a 1,000Hz polling rate. Its eight buttons are configurable via Cougar UIX, as is its 16.7 million colour RGB lighting system, with settings - as with the keyboard - stored in an internal 512Kb memory module. Unlike most gaming mice, Cougar has opted for an ambidextrous design for the 450M, which includes 'anti-slip flanks.'

UK pricing for the new peripherals has yet to be confirmed, more information available on the 450K and 450M product pages.
