Asus has announced the impending launch of a new gaming monitor, featuring AMD's FreeSync variable refresh rate technology and a wide WQHD 2,560x1,440 resolution.

Dubbed the Asus MG278Q, the company's latest monitor offers a 27" diagonal display panel with a 144Hz refresh rate, 1ms grey-to-grey response time, and a 2,560x1,440 WQHD resolution. Designed, the company claims, for 'professional gaming,' the display is packed with features designed to appeal to the gamer: GamePlus with crosshair overlay, timer functionality, and a frames per second (FPS) counter, GameVisual with Scenery, Racing, RTS/RPG, FPS and sRGB display modes, Ultra-Low Blue Light technology with four filter settings to reduce fatigue-inducing blue light emission by up to 70 per cent, and Flicker-Free functionality.

The biggest selling point, however, is likely to be the inclusion of AMD's FreeSync technology. Created by AMD originally as a means of increasing battery life in mobile devices, a FreeSync display partnered with a compatible graphics card allows the refresh rate of the monitor to be dynamically varied to match that of the content - making gameplay smoother and doing away with stutter and tearing.

The exterior of the display includes a narrow bezel and a stand with tilt, swivel, pivot, and height adjustment, along with a quick-release latch and VESA mounting points. Cable management is integrated, to help tame the cables running to the monitor's dual-link DVI, two HDMI, and DisplayPort 1.2 ports, along with two USB 3.0 ports with quick-charging functionality for mobile devices. The company further claims that the in-plane switching (IPS) panel offers 178 degree viewing angles.

Pricing for the Asus MG278Q has yet to be confirmed, with UK availability scheduled by the end of the month. More information is available on the official product announcement.
