SilverStone has launched the SX500-LG - the first in a new line of SFX-L PSUs

SFX-L is a slightly larger format than its popular SFX models such as the SX600-G that we reviewed here. SFX PSUs measure 100mm wide, 125mm deep and 63.5mm high while SFX-L is the same height but slightly wider at 125mm as well as deeper at 130mm.

This makes it considerably smaller than ATX PSUs too, most of which are at least 140mm deep, 85mm high and 149mm wide, many of which struggle to fit in small mini-ITX cases as a result.

The main benefit of making the casing slightly larger is that a larger 120mm fan can be used. Its SFX PSUs are limited to 80mm fans, which, due to their size are generally louder than their 120mm equivalents when shifting the same amount of air and emit a higher noise pitch too.

Using a 120mm fan, SilverStone not only claims lower noise levels as a result (the upper dBA limit has fallen from 40dBA for the SX600-G to 36dBA for the SX500-LG, but the latter offers a semi-fanless mode too under low load conditions.

The SX500-LG is rated at 80 Plus Gold efficiency, is 100 per cent modular and like its smaller SFX counterparts, includes an adaptor that allows it to be used in ATX PSU mounting locations.

According to SilverStone, the recommended end user price (excl. VAT): 89.11 USD. The SX500-LG will be available from the 28th of January. You can also read our interview with SilverStone on its SFX PSUs here.
