Peripherals giant Razer has announced an open beta for a new addition to its Razer Synapse gaming software, allowing users to analyse their performance using heatmaps.

Razer has been releasing a variety of software packages over the last few years, from the Synapse software used to configure its peripherals to the virtual surround-sound system it gave away last year. This latest beta for a new Synapse feature may not be to everyone's taste, however: it requires you to allow the system to track keyboard and mouse activity, the data from which is then uploaded to Razer's cloud service.

When enabled, the new Synapse feature allows users to to view both the raw statistics and process them into heatmap that can be overlaid onto a game screenshot. As well as traditional heatmaps - which colour-code areas according to mouse activity - the data can be represented as a mouse-pattern path, while keyboard activity is overlaid on an image of a - Razer, naturally - physical keyboard to demonstrate your most-used keys. Data can also be shared, and even compared to others - with Razer handily providing data from a selection of pro-gamers so you can feel nicely inadequate.

'This is a fun and unique way that we can add value to our industry-leading products after purchase,' crowed Min-Liang Tan, Razer co-founder and chief executive officer, of the new feature. 'We’re able to visually show gamers, empirically, how they interact with their favourite games. This information can help with anything from improving hotkey and mini-map usage to mouse mat selection and mouse DPI settings, in addition to the multitude of uses it could have for developers when they design game interfaces. Unfortunately it’s next to impossible to ensure compatibility with the thousands of games out there, so we’re counting on our millions of software users to help us test and expand game compatibility.'

More information, and a link to download the heatmap-enabled Synapse beta, can be found on the official website, while a handy-dandy video demonstration is reproduced below.
