Synology has officially launched the DiskStation DS415play network-attached storage (NAS) device, as an alternative to the DS214play for users who find two drive bays a little restrictive.

Based around an Intel Atom dual-core 1.6GHz processor and featuring 1GB of DDR3 memory, the key feature of the DS415play is being powerful enough to perform real-time transcoding of video content in resolutions up to 1080p Full HD. While this ability is shared with the smaller DS214play, the DS415play additionally extends the number of drive bays available to the user from two to four for a total overall capacity of 20TB assuming a four-drive RAID0 array is configured.

The rear of the device includes a pair of cooling fans, the connector for the company's usual external power brick, a gigabit Ethernet connector, two USB 2.0 and two USB 3.0 ports for storage expansion, with a fifth USB port at the front for easy access. The system comes with the latest release of Synology's DiskStation Manager (DSM) operating system, a customised Linux distribution which offers plenty of file-sharing and server functionality with an easy-to-use browser-based user interface.

According to Synology's testing, the DS415play can hit data transfer speeds of up to 112.45MB/s reading and 101.21MB/s writing, with a four-drive RAID5 configuration accessed using Windows CIFS networking. Simultaneous use of the transcoding engine or an encrypted connection such as SFTP will, naturally, reduce the speed accordingly.

The DS415play is available in the UK now, with most retailers pricing it at just below the £400 mark with no bundled drives.
