Apple has seemingly confirmed the launch date of its next iPhone after sending out invites to an event on 10th September.

The event will, as per tradition, be nearly exactly a year since the launch of Apple's last phone, the iPhone 5. However, unlike previous launches the big rumour this year is that Apple will be launching not just a new premium model, expected to be called the iPhone 5S, but a low-price version too.

It is this so-called iPhone 5C that is being seen as the reason for the emphasis on colour in the invite, which features the words "This should brighten everyone's day" written below a cheery arrangement of colourful circles.

Rather than the traditional black or white of previous iPhone's the 5C is expected to have a plastic back available in six colours - white, black, blue, pink, green and yellow. It may also replace the iPod touch as the cheaper portable player option.

Surprisingly little else is known about the specs of either of the new phones, with reports only vaguely talking of the iPhone 5S featuring a quad-core processor and improved camera. It is, however, expected to sport essentially the same physical design, which for those that found the iPhone 5 rather scratch prone will be something of a let down.

Both the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C will run the new iOS 7 operating system that was unveiled at WWDC earlier in the year. This update marks the biggest single change to the OS since the iPhone 3G, with a complete revamp of the look and feel of the OS. The new flatter, colourful style has divided opinion so far but it's possible Apple will have tweaked things further for the phone's launch.

If last year's launch is anything to go by, the iPhone 5S release date will be 20th September, the second Friday following the announcement.
