Network attached storage specialist Synology has officially launched the DiskStation DS213air, its first DiskStation model to include integral Wi-Fi connectivity.

Building on its existing two-bay home and small-office DiskStation range, the Synology DS213air includes an integrated 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi adapter which can be used instead of - or alongside - the usual gigabit wired network connection. The system can also be configured as a range extender for an existing wireless network, or as a wireless router if no wireless network exists.

The system is also the first to include Web Assistant, a new quick-setup interface for the Synology DMS Linux-based operating system which can be operated from a smartphone or tablet. According to Synology, this means the system can be installed, configured and used without ever needing a desktop or laptop computer.

Internally, the DS213air includes a 1.6GHz processor and 256MB of RAM, along with two 3.5in SATA drive bays. When equipped with a pair of top-end hard drives, Synology claims the device can read a RAID 1 array at 108.07MB/s and write at around 58.66MB/s. Two USB 3.0 SuperSpeed ports are included on the rear for adding external drives or, if you start exploring some of the tangential features of the DSM operating system, add-on hardware like webcams.

As with other DiskStation designs, the system features a gigantic heatpipe-equipped processor over the CPU and a single 92mm rear fan, along with two side ventilation openings for a through draft. The result is a device designed for 24/7 operation but at a noise level of a claimed 19dBA. According to Synology, the device draws around 22.44W during reading or writing operations, dropping to 5.76W when the hard drives are hibernating.

'Synology boasts cutting-edge technologies that deliver seamless integration, of which the DS213air is a great example,' claimed Rosiel Lee, Synology product manager, at the launch. 'By incorporating Wi-Fi technology into a feature-rich DiskStation, the DS213air has changed the way people think about NAS servers.'

The Synology DS213air is available now for a recommended retail price of £249.99, although a quick web search turned up a cheapest price of £233.80.
