Behind the scenes of Battlefield 3

Behind the scenes of Battlefield 3

Learn why BF3 looks so stunning.

Dice visual architect Johan Anderson has delivered a keynote speech to Nvidia’s GeForce LAN 6, discussing some behind the scenes details of Battlefield 3. Especially the PC graphics side of things.

The PC has always been our lead platform, the platform we wanted to design the game for’ said Anderson, to much cheering and hollering from the assembled crowd. However, Anderson was keen to make a distinction between graphics and aesthetics:

Most people look at the screenshots and say, “That has good graphics”’ but Anderson argues that actually graphics is just a portion of ‘the aesthetics and visual style of a game to create a pleasing whole.’ He also hinted that the singleplayer and multiplayer graphics will be different, with the singleplayer delivering superior visuals.

Anderson also pointed out that graphics can enhance gameplay, and beyond the obvious enhanced immersion point. With better graphics you can have more definition on levels, larger maps; you can see muzzle flares and snipers and shooting from hide-outs.

Anderson then dived into some technical details of how the Frostbite 2 engines was designed and developed, and how Dice optimised the games for multi-core CPUs and DirectX 11. Watch the videos and see for yourself!

Battlefield 3 is on sale on 28 October for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.

Don't really care about the SP of Battlefield 3 but that SP trailer is one of the best I've ever seen.

nVidia have probably just photoshopped over it to not annoy people when it says Xbox 360.

It's no secret that most of the US studios have been mainly interested in the console buck and passing off console ports as PC games- Epic and id's Carmack have recently said as much. DICE, to their credit, have tried to shake things up with BF3, using PC's latest tech, for both better performance efficiency and of course the prettier visuals helping to maintain immersion. Some would say they've taken a risk , but I'd guess most PC gamers are with them and hope this will be a triumph. I certainly do, I had BF3 on pre-order.

Friggin awesome with cheese!

Andy McNabb went in white faced and came out purple & dripping in sweat! When a former SAS man, (who earned just about every medal there is to be awarded) gets so caught up in a game simulator he turns purple faced and gets out of breath, I think that ranks as a win!

Interesting to watch his tactics too...

Yes, it's amazing what they put together in a short time.

If the PC was the lead platform why are all the controls ported from the Xbox and half the buttons on my joystick don't work?
bogie170 26th October 2011, 13:36 Quote
And yes I am already playing BF3 by spoof ip activation from Korea!
DriftCarl 26th October 2011, 16:00 Quote
been playing since Monday (woo for Korean VPN activation) gotta nip down PC world today for the jets and helicopter because you really are at a disadvantage using just a mouse vs people with joysticks. Any cheap one will do with a twist ability.

Really do love the game atm, the effects are fantastic and the gameplay is brilliant. will most likley be playing for the whole weekend non stop :D

Have to say BF3 is looking sweet! Won;t be getting origin though I'm afraid so I suspect I'm relegated to watching trailers...meh!

Can we have a joystick group test with the game? I haven't the first idea of which one to buy, if I bother at all.

Yeah I started playing this last night and I am really happy because my current pc will run it at 1920x1080 on the Ultra setting's with anything from 45-60fps.

I5 2500K @ 4.8ghz
8gb DDR3 Ram
GTX 480 @ Stock Speed's.

I used my paid for VPN and connected to Washington DC, and let some other people use it and they are now playing it as well.

My dad has issues though as he couldn't log in to the Battlelog, and that is fixed but now he can't log in to the EA Back End System which, may not be fixed for a week according to EA.

Go to say though I am loving the game and the look's off it , and now Call Of Duty has been fully removed because it in my mind just cannot compete.

Much better game though than Battlefield Bad Company 2.

Can I ask why you won't use Origin, as it's not that bad I have not had any issues with it unlike Steam which gives me nothing but issues.

I don't have any issues with Steam (i'm not saying you don't) but this whole "I won't play because of Origin" bullshit is getting pretty lame now. Noone has actually given a good answer when asked why...crap about monopolising the market - as if just sticking to Steam would mean that Steam wouldn't have a monopoly...or rubbish about EA keeping your details - so do a lot of sites but people make it sound like the whole reason they setup Origin is so that EA can sell our details to the Russian mob or something.

I actually can't see anything wrong with Origin - are EA not allowed to create a download portal like Steam? Why not? Are EA automatically an evil empire because they are one of the largest game manufacturers in the world? Then surely that means that Steam must be evil for being the largest legal download platform and therefore having the ability to set prices.
DriftCarl 27th October 2011, 11:31 Quote
EA have actually done a better job with origin that I thought they would. There is nothing wrong with it. it uses 60 meg of ram and has some nice features like cloud backup of your saved games. It keeps your games up to date too.
Personally though, I do like battlelog better, it is a shame origin isnt just web based like battlelog.

I agree with this.

I actually prefer to use Origin simply because I don't have to suffer from slow download's from Overloaded servers, and also the games sold on there take in to account the difference in currency where as Steam doesn't.

It makes me laugh when people say I won't buy BF3 because of Origin but I will buy MW3 because it uses Steam.

Steam and Origin are the same thing, except Steam has a few extra thing's that Origin doesn't yet.

I am just glad I don't have to use Steam for BF3 because atleast I can still play the game when Steam goes down and you can't sign in to your friend's list etc.

Anyways...enough of this rubbish. Bit-Gamer...why haven't you reviewed this yet? And none of your 2 page overviews, we want the reviews of old - graphic tests, techy speccy stuff!
yassarikhan786 27th October 2011, 13:57 Quote
I definitely want to see a massively in-depth review of Battlefield 3. I guess that's what Bit-tech are doing, which would explain how long it's taking to do the review, or they might be waiting for the 28th. Either way I want to see a massively detailed review :).
