bit-tech Android app beta test open

The app enables you to easily read bit-tech and the forums on your phone.

For the past few months, we've been working on building bit-tech's first smartphone app. While the site renders correctly on many mobile browsers, the width of the design and number of stories means you need to do a lot of zooming to make text readable. Loading all of the full-weight site can be slow on 3G as well, and the forums are very tricky to navigate - unless you're using the Tapatalk app, but then you're not able to easily switch back and forth from the forums to site.

All this, and rising numbers of readers accessing the site with smartphones meant we decided it was time to start looking at making a reader app for the site - especially when a talented Android developer got in touch. He's been working with Jamie and the rest of the bit-tech team to craft the app over the last few months, and we're happy to announce it's now ready for its public beta. We're looking for Android phone users to help us test it, iron out the bugs and add some polish to the overall experience.

The app enables you to easily read both bit-tech and the forums on your phone. You can post to threads, add specific sections to a favourite list to easily follow the news you're most interested in, and we've worked hard to make the interface quick and efficient. To keep data costs and load times down, pictures don't auto-load and the app also supports sharing stories via Facebook, Twitter and email.

If you're interested in taking part in the beta test, you'll need an Android phone and should be willing to provide us feedback and fill in the odd bug report - while we've worked hard to get the app into good shape, it is still beta software. To take part in the beta, just comment on this article and we'll drop you a PM with the details.

Count me in. Desire 2.2 here - I've always found the stock browser struggles a bit, especially when leaving comments.

And very well done for choosing an Android app over an iPhone one. Android phones have been outselling iOS phones for the last six months (Phones running Blackberry's OS have been outselling iOS phones too incidentally, but no-one buys Blackberry apps), so you're definitely going down the right route.

I'm posting from the app. This app is great. But for the next upgrade it must have to be able to use horizontally, especially when typing because in smaller displays it's just painful. The app is so quick!
enikmaster 23rd March 2011, 13:25 Quote
Posting from the app... nice app! Next upgrade: it must work horizontally, specially when typing.

Thanks - please log into the bug tracker and file this request there - that way Marcin, the dev, can keep on top of things ;)

Send me a PM, I'd be happy to test the android app.

Though I still wonder why everyone makes a android app. Webbrowser is mostly sufficient for viewing websites and reading articles.

I have a Google Nexus One running Cyanogen Mod 7 Nightly's.
Stickeh 23rd March 2011, 16:58 Quote
htc desire. looks like you have a lot of interest in the app!
leexgx 23rd March 2011, 17:06 Quote
me as well
HTC desire 2.2

comment before I get the app

has it the time out on the connection set to an low level like 5-10 secs then retry 2 times as a lot of apps I have played with do not handle the mobile data to WiFi switch over and stop for an bit or for ever until you press back or reload (even opera does not cope with it as well)

opera mini works very well with the site

Definitely interested in this, if it's still open. I'm running a stock HTC Desire and an Advent Vega with the Modaco Custom ROM - both are FroYo 2.2 (though the Vega will get Honeycomb as soon as it hits AOSP :D).

Any news on this? Bit tech is rubbish on the standard Android web browser, and I find the forums difficult too.

If it's not coming out for a while I might just buy tapatalk...
Kovoet 12th May 2011, 17:18 Quote
Why not use tapatalk or am I barking up the wrong tree

TheManicGibbon 12th May 2011, 17:36 Quote
I suppose I'll have to try it, I too have kind of given up :p

We're a community of hardware nuts and modders, I think we can handle some bugs in a BETA app..or not :)
Andy Mc 12th May 2011, 18:38 Quote
Personally I found tapatalk to be a bit poo, viewing the forum in the regular android browser is better. But tapatalk is better for replying and posting.

Don't know if I already posted to this thread but I am also interested. Using an HTC Desire.

I tried to make a post to the forums from my phone in the past, but the phone slowed to a crawl and caused typing delays due to all the 40 or so smileys animating in that reply box, I just gave up in the end.

I take it this app has died/stagnated? Not heard anything for months, since then i've gone from a hero to an sgs2.

It's still kind of working. Updates are sporadic and not all articles.

Excellent when working properly though.
jezmck 30th June 2011, 19:31 Quote
Any official update?
smc8788 30th June 2011, 22:33 Quote
Is the app still on version 1.0 or are there any updates for it?

I find it hard to believe that Dennis would put the time and effort into developing an app and then just abandon it, especially as there were very few bugs (from my experience anyway) in the beta version.
brave758 1st July 2011, 00:43 Quote
yep still waiting will run beta if needed
Jack_Pepsi 1st July 2011, 16:49 Quote
I'm using what I believe is version 3. Go to *snip*. You'll see the different versions there.
