AMD has announced the first GPU in its professional-grade FirePro series that won't bear the ATI brand: the AMD FirePro 2270.

Designed for professional use in CAD workstations and rendering systems, the new card is the first in the FirePro line released since the company made the decision to retire the ATI brand back in August, after acquiring the graphics card specialist in 2006.

The budget-end FirePro 2270 card has a low-profile design and passive cooler, and is intended to replace the actively-cooled FirePro 2250. The card's design includes support for both single-lane and 16x PCI-E slots, and 512MB of graphics memory is included as standard.

Meanwhile, there's also support for both DirectX 11 and OpenGL 4.1, and various breakout cables for the card's DMS-59 connector enable you to hook up two displays over DisplayPort, DVI or VGA connections at resolutions of up to 2,560 x 1 600 (1,920 x 1,200 over VGA).

The main selling point of the FirePro 2270, however, is its low power consumption. The whole card only consumes 15W at full load, enabling manufacturers to include high-performance graphics support in devices that would have previously relied on integrated graphics chips.

Designed primarily for CAD, multi-monitor workstations, trading floors and medical imaging systems, the card is expected to start shipping in the US over the next few weeks at a cost of $149 - likely to equate to at least £120 in the UK. It's not cheap compared with comparable consumer-grade cards, but it also has the bonus of a controlled manufacturing process, low power consumption, a minimum four-year life-cycle and a three-year warranty, which should make it more attractive to large-scale businesses.
