Not to be outdone by the guys at DFI and Asus, MSI is also hot on the micro-ATX trail with its X58M. The bad news? It's still brown.

Techpowerup broke the news with a nice, large picture showing the latest to MSI's X58 'wares - sporting a full six memory slots, seven SATA, one eSATA, two PCI-Express 2.0 x16 slots, one open-ended x4 and a PCI slot, Realtek High-Definition audio and Gigabit LAN, as well as what looks like old-school overclocking jumpers by the base too.

With six (non-Dr.MOS) phases of power we don't hold out that much hope for overclocking - and we certainly hope MSI does something about the cooling.

There's the usual high quality Nippon Chemicon solid capacitors and sealed chokes dotted around and generally the layout is pretty good considering its condensed size, but MSI - you could have really dropped that estate-expensive IDE and floppy ports!

Considering the Asus Rampage II Gene is a shade over £200 which is "relatively good value" in the grand scheme of X58s, MSI will have to price aggressively in our opinion in order to sway people its way. However, with a market of just a handful of micro-ATX X58s, it's certainly less competitive than the full ATX field where you can't move for a dozen options from every manufacturer.

Why do MSI keep using that crap PCB color, i don't care if it is £50 cheaper than the Asus/DFi boards I still wouldn't buy it for the colour.

This is an enthusiast level motherboard. I'm not at all surprised people would have a preference for a different color.

I actually don't think it looks too bad really, at least it doesn't have lavender sata ports!

I have the Abit Fatal1ty-F-I90HD (a picture for the colour aficionados - http://www.abit.com.tw/upload/products/fatal1ty-f-i90hd_top_500.jpg), and I am glad to see the enthusiast mATX market finally becoming competitive, feature wise. On my own board I use the top PCI-E slot for a dedicated network card, and the bottom PCI slot for a dedicated sound-card.

My bug-bear is with with supposedly single-slot graphics cards. I have (and will soon be replacing) an ASUS EAX1950PRO-HTDP-256 (a picture - http://www.super-bazar.cz/image/thumb/150736.jpg). I am curious as to which designer thought having a heat-pipe extend directly above the PCB was a good idea. Thankfully, most Nvidia 'cards are not that bad, and that is who will I be buying from next.

Any suggestions for a good single-slot (given my criticism) Nvidia graphics-card? Price is not an issue.

I say it looks pretty good w/ the DARK brown and black/blue ports. The yellow IDE though? They couldn't have made that blue or black like the rest.

I would hope that this board would be in the region of £80 - £120 mark, back where motherboard prices should be!
