Sony has announced plans to move to a new 65nm graphics chip by the end of this year.
Sony boss Kaz Hirai has indicated in a series of slides from an internal corporate strategy meeting at Sony that the company is planning to update the PlayStation 3 graphics chip later this year.
The plan is, according to
Kotaku, for Sony to update the PlayStation 3's graphics chip to a new 65nm model by Q4 this year.
The new graphics chip will be smaller, cooler and cheaper to produce than the current model, so Sony is understandably keen to make the move as soon as possible as the PlayStation 3 is still seen by many as prohibitively expensive compared to the Nintendo Wii and Microsoft Xbox 360.
Kaz Hirai also indicated in the meeting that Sony is looking to reduce the total number of components in the PlayStation 3, as well as introduce some more new and exciting titles for the console - but specifics are a little lacking.
Hopefully the move to a new graphics processor will go smoother than similar moves made by Microsoft to update to smaller chips, which resulted in months of speculation, rumour and disappointment before the new models arrived.

Sony are distraught at this news X_X
out on the christmas season of 2008 and are going to pump out half-arsed games and allow 750mb of storage for XBLA tiles
and online storage in which sony will allow 4x the storage for ps3 and release 15 new franchises for the ps3 and have resistance 3
up and running with 100players runnig amuck which would be a nightmere for insomiac that and 17 new studios open in wales
meaning i'd be able to make games of my own which will sell systems around the world.
How do you know? Did they release a statement?
Still, the console running cooler is a good thing. Although mine barely gets warm (in a well ventilated area) and the fans are inaudible unless the room is otherwise silent. :)
When games console pricing goes wrong.......
You've got a whole lot of gamers out of pocket.
In my experience, it's the DVD Drive which is the loudest part on the 360.. Not entirely sure why. But that's the component which gives my ears the most hassle.
LOL. I hope that was meant in jest, cos it just really cheered me up. I love the idea of Sony selling a few more consoles so thinking "what shall we do with all the money? Lets open up more games studios! In WALES!!!!"
But.. then all the games will be covered in Sea Mammal Bile.... Silly Sony...
Oh...
LOL
plus i got an HDTV playing only regular cable :(
No, check out a real review of mgs4. Zero Punctuation's just bitched about the cut scenes for 5 minutes and barely covered the actual game at all. Gametrailers made a pretty good video review of it.
Same here on all stated.
I still dont get the price issue? The PS3 will always be more expensive than the Wii and Xbox 360 because there is more machine for your money. But what gets me is that people still moan about the price today which is just £10 - £50 at most (depending one where you shop) than the 360 Elite. The PS3 has been cheaper this year than what I paid for my 360 Premium only one year before, and nobody moaned about the 360 being too expensive. Thats £200 slashed from its original rrp of £500 in less than a year of its release. People in this country and USA just want stuff for nothing. It doesnt happen unless your a benefit freak.
I can only assume its competitor fan boys and those that dont ever have any intention on buying a PS3 that moan about the price.
I loved how you pointed out the 360 price example. I felt like I was the only one who saw this, as well. If you really think about it, the cost of the 20GB Premium + (the inevitable) XBL subscription = 40GB PS3 while the 120GB Elite + (the inevitable) XBL subscription = 80GB PS3. I know that at E3, MS is supposed to drop the price of all SKU's so this is another reason I feel like Sony will refresh its lineup with two new SKU replacements *crossing fingers* to respond to it and possibly doing like they did on the 60GB's and price dropping the 40GB's $50 cheaper to $349?, who knows.....again wishful thinking....
Best Comeback Ev-er.
Hahaha. :)
360 is one noisy arse machine
ps3 is silent in comparison
my pc is quieter than my 360 is which is rather shocking considering its got alot more graphics hardware.
I don't buy anything that has been *deliberately gimped* to reach a price point.
It will help get more PS3 owners, and it looks like it may coincide with Home being released, which should also boost sales which is a good thing for owners all round.
I think Sony need to push the software side of things more, the machine is good as is,
I just got my PS3 and i like how quiet it is, its not silent though.
If the new'en was cheap enough and had a few extra bits and bobs thrown in, i think i would be tempted. Asuming it was quieter still...

Comebacks tend to be in response to verbal attack...
I was merely making a statement.
Also, does your HTPC support Blu-Ray?
Not one of those games interests me in the slightest..
And my HTPC WILL support both Blu-Ray and HD DVD (because HD DVDs are REALLY cheap nowadays.. "£2.99 for 300? Yes please!")
Wonder how consoles will keep up with pc technology since they are already 2gens behind. If MS or Sony even think about continuing the fight graphically one of them will spend alot of money . Anything above £350 uk price wont be brought in numbers. Both companys relise this. So how do you fit £1200 of hardware into £350. You either take huge money losses . Or dont do it.
Next gen wars would be fun to see.
Since i dont see how either can compete with even the basic of pcs today. Most basic pcs have ati 3850 graphics card. Which is still a more powerful card than a 360 or ps3 have.
gameplay wise the games will have to be brilliant. Halo3 is the end of that stupid fransise or so we thought. forza 3 please give 2 disk version. as for there big game at christmas gears of war. Its a console fps in a console world. Its no were near a good game on pc.
would like to see ps3 and 360s actual online numbers a night. Not just accounts. If its gets close to any decent online pc game id be shocked. Even combined. There may be 10million 360s but id hazzard a guess less than half are online. And half of that care for online games. GTA 4 gets old fast online after 1hr you wont go back. halo 3 was fun for a few days same as before though gets boring. no other real titles worth mensioning. PS3 doesnt really have a game worth going online with. cod 4 perhaps ( its better on pc) metal gear online could be one yet to try it though
The PC has to have significantely high specifications to run a game compared to a console due to the fact that the developers have to make a barely optimised, one size fits all, game, to make sure that its compatible with the most systems.
A console has fixed hardware that cant be changed. So a developer can code 'to the metal' on them and produce highly optimised games.
The case example at the moment is the fact that the most impressive visual PC games dont actually look leaps and bounds above the best of either of the two 'power consoles'.
In a few years time, todays performance PC parts can be squeezed into a console at a lower cost, and that 30-50% performance difference that PCs enjoy today, can have heavily optimised games for consoles that are, as with today, not that far behind the latest on PC.
normally i dont care for fanboy argument threads, which all console ones become eventually..
but HUH? since when was the 360 not a games console? did you get sold an off white waffle iron by mistake
I don't need sony to prove they make good games cause they've already proven that, and i don't see microsoft making anything better then they've already made i.e. window 95, 98, xp, just up to date.
My point was simple, gaming on the 360 can not be called the best cool extra feature because that's all it can do its not considered a feature, whereas the PS3 is central hub to my home theater being able to do anything i want it to do in that aspect and it never crapping out on me in the process. Why is it that sony is losing money hand over fist on every PS3 sold? Because it cost that much to make and its being sold on a price point close to the 360, its a better product hands down especially at its price point. hell look at the wii sub $200 dollar price point and for what it can do just proves why its liked by more people then by all the fans of all the consoles prior to it. i did not "get sold an off white waffle iron by mistake", I bought a box of crap. But hey if the PS3 is not useful to a person then so what neither is playing video games. And thank you for normally not caring for fanboy arguments.
