PCIe 2.0 to arrive by Christmas

PCI-Express 2.0 brings more power and higher transfer rates to PCI-Express 2.0 compliant products.

PCI-SIG, the special interest group that oversees the PCI-Express specification, said that PCI-Express 2.0 compliant products are on schedule to appear on the market in December at a PCI-SIG developer conference held yesterday in San Jose.

According to the special interest group, the first applications for the new specification will be the same ones that benefited from PCI-Express 1.0 and 1.1.

This means we'll hopefully see a host of graphics cards, RAID controllers and ultra high-speed networking devices showing up on the market. PCI-SIG was also keen to highlight the fact that the new specification would be backwards compatible with all other versions of the standard.

The new specification was finalised in January, which includes doubling the transfer rate from 2.5Gbps to 5.0Gbps and also doubling the amount of power that can be drawn through the slot to 150W.

In addition, the new spec introduces a new 8-pin supplementary power connector, capable of delivering 150W. This made its first appearance on the Radeon HD 2900 XT.

Intel apparently demonstrated unreleased graphics cards from AMD and Nvidia on its Stoakley chipset for workstations, which offers two PCI-Express 2.0 ports supporting 16 lanes each. Graphics are undoubtedly the major driver for the new specification, but 10Gbit/sec networking devices will also use PCI-Express 2.0's bandwidth.

The first consumer chipset supporting PCI-Express 2.0 will be Intel's X38 Express, which is set for release in week 38 of this year, so from that perspective we can start to see products appearing after that.

Plus, it says it has 5GB/s bw.. not 10? or do you have to have two PCIe2 slots to get 10gbit?

You can get both switches and disk systems that have the speed to keep up with it, they just cost a (tiny) bit

I think thats 5gb per lane
so a 16c PCIe2.0 card would have a max bandiwdth of around 8GB/sec

Even the current PCIe standard has more than enough bandwidth for current networking and RAID cards, though the most recent RAID cards are getting close with around 2GB/sec.

How much bandwidth do top-end graphics cards pull through atm, it strikes me that they may be close.

HM cos its a 1.25Gbps card, so it only needs a x8 PCI-E slot
Why is bit saying it needs a PCI-E2 slot ?

Also, dang that card costs more then a reasonable computer :o

Does this mean were gonna see more power hungry cards? If one slot needed 150w and you had SLi or Crossfire setup that would be 300w just for the graphics cards let alone everything else! :)

Backwards compatible, yes, it's stated in the article (i.e. 1 in 2), for forwards compatible (2 in 1)? How often does that happen in computing?

As for the 600W we're presumably going to see being needed for Crossfire and SLI set-ups, lol, me thinks people are going to need bigger power packs! Hopefully this increase in power will reach a plateu soon and it won't just keep eponentially increasing.

As for the bandwidth speed though, mmm, very nice.
