AMD hits the top 10 chip makers

The chip that started AMD's resurgence.

AMD has finally grown up and is now one of the top ten chip makers in the world, according to research firm iSuppli.

However, the firm still has a long way to go to catch up with arch rivals Intel. Whilst AMD is entering the charts at a respectable number seven, Intel is still number one by far, despite seeing its revenues actually slip last year.

AMD's revenue shot up last year from $3.9bn last year up to a massive $7.5bn, off the back of big increases in Opteron sales and, of course, the chunky Dell deal.

The rest of the chart is made up of some names you've heard of (Samsung, Hynix, Freescale) and some you've not (Renasas, NXP).

AMD's revenue predictions have also increased thanks to the addition of the ATI business unit, which adds its revenue to AMD's own for this year - even though it did take on a rather chunky multi-billion-dollar loan to sort the purchase.

Are you surprised to see AMD hit the top ten? And do you think they can ever catch up to Intel, whose revenue is roughly four times that of the green and red team? Let us know your thoughts over in the forums.

I think it could, but to do so i think they need something that can seriously compete against the conroe chips

I don't think they'll catch up with Intel anytime soon but they should continue to climb these tables.

it will take them awhile to catch up with the Intel, especially now, unless they have some killer trick up their sleeve and drop us some man made nanocarbon, or diamond wafers that reap everything else down.

"ever"?: maybe. Soon?: Not unless Intel suffers some major disasters.

I'd like to see them about equal just because they need the competition to push innovation and keep prices "reasonable".

Edit: Now if only someone could seriously challenge M$
