Intel is already sampling 45nm Penryn chips

Intel is already sampling 45nm processors based on the Core architecture and expects to sell them in Q3 2007.

With the rumours surrounding AMD's imminent release of its first 65 nanometre processors, Intel is reportedly playing the one-upmanship game.

Reuters has received word that the company is already sampling its Penryn family processors that are being manufactured in one of the company's fabs in Oregon.

Intel's Mark Bohr, Director of Process Architecture and Integration, has stated that the chip giant is on track to start selling the chips in the second half of 2007.

Bohr told Reuters that the chip giant is "processing the first samples of the Penryn design. These samples will go back to the design team to determine if design is working as expected."

Penryn is a 45 nanometre shrink of Intel's 65 nanometre Core 2 Duo based Conroe die. Intel has already mapped out its plans to move to new architectures every two years, with upgrades to finer fabrication processes happening in between the architectural progressions.

We were just looking at this yesterday in semiconductor physics - very cool stuff, and the next five years are going to be exceedingly interesting as we approach the tunneling limit and everything starts going quantum...

As long as you have got ziggy quantum will not be a problem :)

"Penryn" :? Who names these things? Can I name the next one? How about "Murgurfkinfleegan" (sounds kinda like swearing in German :D )

Sounds like welsh to me since I can't really remember much of my high school welsh I can't say what it means, other than I think there may be a place with the name.

Quite why a japanese group (who's R&D people work out of silicon valley?) is using a welsh word for a name .. well I'd be interested to know ;)

And yes, definite one-upmanship there "don't buy theres! we'll have a better one in 6-12 months!"

Penryn is a town in cornwall, it's also a town in California, which I guess is more likely the origin. It's also the place name for about 1/3rd of welsh towns, villages, quarries, and rock types.

The Welsh word is actually spellt Penrhyn which translates to promontory, i.e. a peace of land sticking out to sea.

The best processor codename has already been used by Cyrix; "Jedi".

It's a new word to me and sounds odd as a town name (to me), but I suppose I have been to places with odder names.
