Intel offers $1m for case designs

Can you out-design Alienware? Intel will pay you up to $1 million if you can design a new Viiv PC case

Intel is offering up to $1m to the designer or manufacturer who comes up with the most sexy, small and stylish Viiv PC design.

Open to all PC designers and manufacturers, the prize includes resources to mass produce and market the system.

“Our intent with the Intel Core Processor Challenge is to think outside of the box - think sexy, small and sleek PCs optimized for multimedia entertainment - and we’re putting our money where our mouth is,” said Eric Kim, vice president and general manager, Intel’s Digital Home Group. “Consumers today make home PC purchase decisions based on more than just price and features; they also consider the size, shape and style. Ultimately we want to see more stylish and smaller PCs that have the performance and power efficiency thanks to Intel Core 2 Duo processors, as well as the essential multimedia capabilities that Intel Viiv technology delivers, making them a great entertainment system for any room in the home.”

PC makers have so far failed to out-design Apple, and Intel is really hoping that this bounty will bring some undiscovered talent to the fore. The systems will be judged by a panel including Paul Otellini and representatives from IDEO and GQ Magazine.

The winner will be announced at the Spring IDF. This seems like a perfect opportunity for modders - why not hook up with your local system builder and sort out a design to enter?
