Here's a quick news byte for those of you who have been looking forward to the storage capacity that Blu-ray offers. Sony has begun to ship its dual-layer Blu-ray discs, which hold 50GB each - enough for up to four hours of HD video.

Questions had previously been raised about the durability of a Blu-ray disc compared to its HD-DVD counterparts, but Sony hopes the new discs will put this to rest. The company has spent considerable time designing a better scratch-resistant coating for the discs, which should also help prevent corrosion and deterioration over time. Also, it has re-designed its AccuCORE technology, which makes sure the disc spins level during the writing process, preventing many common writing and reading errors.

All of this refinement comes with a cost, though, as the discs are debuting at a whopping $48.00 USD per piece. Though a little hefty on the pocketbook, this amounts to less than $1 per GB - not bad for a new technology, even if it's nowhere near as cheap as DVDs have become.

Hopefully the new scratch-coating is also fireproof.
