Turn down your iPod volume

Apple has released a firmware update for iPods that allows you to set a volume limit that the device won't exceed.

The firmware update also claims to fix a number of bugs in the iPod Video and iPod Nano. We've personally seen some odd occurrences on the Nano in the Menu options, so we'll be intruiged to see if it fixes those up.

Apple has come under fire from lawyers in the US for allowing people to listen to their iPods at a level which might damage their hearing. Apparently, all notion of personal responsibility has died in America.

In Europe, it died a long time ago, since the company has been shipping volume-limited iPods to European countries, including France, since last year (inadvertently creating an underground market for imported, non-limited iPods).

Of course, the problem with volume-limiting the source device is that if you have headphones that require a lot of power to drive, you may end up with a situation where the music simply isn't loud enough to hear on your listening device of choice, if you have expensive tastes.

However, the volume limit that is added to global iPods with this update isn't compulsory, it's optional. Here's hoping they don't take it to the next stage.

If you're desperate to limit the volume on your iPod, you can go and grab the update here. Everyone else can comment on the pointlessness of the entire exercise over in the forums.
