In an interview given to WorthPlaying, Todd Hollenshead has confirmed that QuakeCon will be moving house for the 2006 event.

Todd is CEO of id Software, and is legendary in the UK press corps for apparently knowing very little about actually making games (long story, to be recounted another day...) However, he does know all about the inner workings of the software company, and so the QuakeCon anouncement is something to sit up and take notice of.

"We're almost certain that the venue for QuakeCon 2006 will change... The sponsors are enthusiastic, and I know the fans are looking forward to it, so we have some ideas about making QC06 a special one by building on everything that worked well last year and mixing in some new stuff, too. Of course the LAN party and tournament will be the focus of the event, but as anyone who's been to QuakeCon can attest, there's more to it than that. There's still a possibility we may move QuakeCon outside of Texas (!) for this year."

Moving the event from its traditional home may cause angst to regular con-goers, but will also allow id to expand the event into more of a festival of gaming, we feel. Previous events have attracted high-line sponsors including Nvidia and Intel, and we rather get the feeling that this years convention will include more of a hardware / sponsorship presence. Afterall, what id provide is effectively a captured audience for a weekend of marketing messaging!

There's a few more interesting things in the rest of the interview, but nothing as noteworth as this announcement. Are you planning on attending QuakeCon? Let us know your thoughts on the pros and cons of the current venue, and where you would like to see it switched to. Drop us those ideas over in the forums.
