As if there was already enough interest in the release of Apple's first Intel-based notebook, dubbed MacBook Pro, Apple have seen fit to upgrade the Intel Core Duo CPU offerings before a single unit has shipped.

Shipping this week, the PowerBook replacement ditches the originally announced 1.67GHz base model processor in favour of a more powerful 1.83GHz chip previously reserved for the top-end model.

The pony up a bit more cash and you will find a 2.0GHz Core Duo under the hood. Anyone wanting yet more grunt can specify a 2.16GHz CPU by using the Apple Store to buy a built-to-order machine. The range-topping processor comes at a US$300 premium.

The model line-up remains otherwise unchanged: ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 graphics with either 128MB or 256MB of GDDR3 memory depending on which MacBook Pro you buy. 512MB or 1GB of RAM (upgradeable to 2GB), up to 120GB of hard drive storage and a slick, slot-loading DVD burner. The 15" widescreen display remains the same 1440x900 as before.

US readers will need to find $1999 or $2499 for the stock models, and a lofty $2799 for the range-topping 2.16GHz MacBook. UK pricing is £1429 and £1799 inc vat yet curiously, the UK Apple Store has not yet been updated and thus still lists the older 1.67GHz / 1.83GHz MacBook Pros. We expect it will be updated shortly.

Are you any more tempted to buy a MacBook Pro now than you were before? Or does the idea of spending £1500 or more on a notebook make your eyes water? Have a chat and see what's going on in our News Discussion forum.
