After firing some more questions over to one of ATI's top Technical PR Manager, Rene Froeleke, we learned some more details about the upcoming All-In-Wonder X800 XL.

He confirmed to us that the All-In-Wonder X800 XL is based around the same ATI Tuner that was included in the All-In-Wonder X800 XT, but with some improvements to allow for the newly supported DVB-T format. The ATI Tuner in the All-In-Wonder X800 XT used the Theater 200 chipset for TV decoding.

The main fundamental difference between the Theater 550 and Theater 200 chips is that the Theater 550 chip does MPEG-2 encoding, as well as TV decoding. This means that the All-In-Wonder X800 XL's tuner output is a digitised TV stream that can be converted in to MPEG-2 or any other file format using ATI's Multimedia Center software suite.

On the other hand, the Theater 550 chip takes an analogue TV stream and converts it in to an MPEG-2 stream before displaying it on screen.

Finally, the jury is still out on whether the All-In-Wonder X800 XL will have support for CrossFire or not. ATI are currently working their way through testing the final board layout design, and they are not far enough through that process to confirm or deny compatibility of AIW X800 XL with CrossFire Edition video cards.

We'll keep you as up to date as we can on the progress of this interesting topic. One thing is for sure at the moment though, it would be one very, very attractive product if it is at all possible to couple an All-In-Wonder X800 XL with a CrossFire Edition video card.
