Slightly lower clocks will deliver better yields and quieter operation.
We have just learnt that Gigabyte are set to launch an inexpensive version of the GV-3D1, dual GeForce 6600 GT video card known as the GV-3D1-XL.
The card is much the same as the GV-3D1, in that it is currently only supported on Gigabyte motherboards, and it will be supplied as part of the premium bundle with the Gigabyte GA-K8N Ultra-SLI, which is an SLI motherboard for those on a budget.
The motherboard does not feature the additional DPS add-in card, that is designed to provide a purer supply of power to the important components on the motherboard. There are eight SATA ports, of which four will be SATA II ports, controlled by the NForce 4 SLI chipset. Incidentally, the chipset is also cooled by a fanless heatsink, which will allow for quiet operation, providing the GV-3D1-XL's fan is not too loud. You can see a picture of the GA-K8N Ultra-SLI motherboard
on Gigabyte's Japanese site.
The GV-3D1-XL will feature two NV43 (GeForce 6600) graphics processors each clocked at 450MHz. The NV43 GPU has eight pixel pipelines and three vertex shaders and a 128-bit memory interface. The GV-3D1-XL will have two 128-bit memory interfaces - one for each GPU - that will connect to 256MB of GDDR3 clocked at 1000MHz.
The performance of the GV-3D1-XL should be around 90% of its faster sibling, the GV-3D1, but the cooling solution looks to be a good deal quieter than the faster version of the card.
We are unsure of expected pricing and when it is set to land in Europe right now, but there are some more pictures of the bundle over at Akiba PC Hotline
