Microsoft is continuing to push the fresh new backwards-compatibility feature of its Xbox One console, promising to continue adding compatible titles to the list and offering a free copy of The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings to anyone who wants to give it a go.

After claims that backwards compatibility was backwards and a particularly nasty hoax, Microsoft gave its Xbox One console the ability to play Xbox 360 games back in November. The move echoed support for original Xbox games added to the Xbox 360, complete with the need for each game to have a dedicated compatibility shim written - meaning slow growth in the list of compatible titles before Microsoft's abandonment of the project.

The company has taken pains to reassure users that it is continuing to work on adding more games to the compatibility list for the Xbox One, though - and it's putting its money where its mouth is with a giveaway. Any Xbox One owner who fancies trying the Xbox 360 backwards compatibility feature can now download a copy of The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, free to keep forever, from the Xbox Marketplace between now and the 5th of February.

The freebie comes as the company adds new games to the compatibility list, including Sam & Max Save the World, Small Arms, Space Giraffe, and Soulcalibur. It also brings with it a consolation prize for those who have not yet upgraded to Microsoft's latest-and-greatest console: if you have an Xbox 360, you can still download The Witcher 2 for free and play it on the console for which it was designed.

Microsoft is pushing its backwards compatibility feature heavily while Sony continues its work on adding PlayStation 2 compatibility to the PS4, which currently lacks a means of playing last-generation PS3 games locally but can stream them from Sony's Gaikai-powered cloud gaming service for a fee.
