Square Enix and Eidos Montreal have announced the cancellation of Augment Your Pre-Order, a semi-pyramid scheme created to encourage early 'investment' in the next Deus Ex title.

When Deus Ex: Mankind Divided's Augment Your Pre-Order was first leaked ahead of its official announcement, many assumed it was a joke. In a video which turned out to be entirely genuine, Square Enix and Eidos Montreal told buyers that the more people they could convince to pre-order the game the more goodies they would receive. As increasing numbers of pre-orders were to be received, new tiers of content - which had already been produced, but which was to be held ransom from buyers under the AYPO scheme - were to be unlocked. The ultimate tier, meanwhile, would see the game's release brought forward by four days.

Response to the offer was swift and brutal. Given the quality of several AAA launches of late, many warned against pre-ordering at all while others complained that the scheme was forcing fans to turn into salespeople in an effort to unlock in-game content that the companies could have made available on day one at zero cost to themselves.

In the face of such a vehement backlash, the two companies have cancelled the AYPO scheme. 'When it was first conceived, we wanted the programme to give you more choice about what you received in terms of pre-order incentives,' the companies claimed in a joint statement. 'We quickly noticed that this approach created even more frustration than before, resulting in a resounding amount of negative feedback. After much thought and reflection, we decided to close down the programme and make all of the incentive content available to anyone who pre-orders Deus Ex: Mankind Divided or purchases a Day 1 edition of the game. Additionally, the release date will no longer be changed in accordance with pre-order numbers, and everyone will gain access to the game on February 23rd, 2016.'

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is due to launch on Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
