Rockstar Games has announced Freemode Events, an impending update for its GTA Online portion of Grand Theft Auto V, but in doing so has admitted that it is drawing the curtains on the title's last-generation origins.

Rockstar originally launched GTAV, the latest in its popular line of crime-'em-ups, for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, followed by a Windows port for PC gamers. The company also released remastered versions for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 which included improved graphics and features not seen on the last-generation console versions.

Now, the company has announced an impending update which brings 'an entirely new way to play' the game: Freemode Events. part of the GTA Online multiplayer aspect of the game, Freemode Events do away with lobbies, menus, and - the company claims - load times in favour of 'spontaneous and chaotic new games and challenges.' While in Freemode on GTA Online, the company has explained, events can start at any moment - although it will be possible for players to customise their session to decide which of the new game modes will be accessible, if they prefer a more classic experience.

The announcement, however, included the warning that the Freemode Events update would be released only for Windows, Xbox One and PlayStation 4. 'We always knew there might be a point where we would reach the technical capacity of what the older generation of consoles can handle as each downloadable update requires additional memory both for assets and for additional scripting,' the company explained in a Q&A session back in May. 'We have continued to optimise the entire game over time in order to squeeze as much memory as we possibly could out of the last-generation hardware and at some point, continuing to add content for those systems could cause the risk of instability to the game overall.'

More information on the update is available from Rockstar's Newswire page.
