Classic 16-bit era title ToeJam and Earl has taken to Kickstarter to raise money for a new sequel.

ToeJam and Earl: Back to the Groove will draw mainly from the first game in the series that was released back in 1992, but will take elements from the sequel, Panic in Funkatron.

The original series creators have taken to the crowd funding platform in an attempt to raise $400,000. The pitch has already drawn in almost a quarter of this with just over $82,000 pledged and 29 days left on the clock.

Back to the Groove will sport a retro aesthetic with a fixed isometric camera and 2D sprites, albeit in more modernised 3D terrain.

In the Kickstarter pitch, series co-creator Greg Johnson stated there would be randomly generated levels, an emphasis on co-op gameplay and that some features new to the series are also planned. The infamous rocket skates will also be making a return.

The co-op gameplay will support four players with both online and local multiplayer and the local version will feature dynamic split screen that kicks in if players are too far away from each other.

ToeJam and Earl: Back to the Groove is initially being developed for PC, but the developers have plans to take it to other systems too if they get a sufficient level of funding.
