Xbox One users will soon be able to take screenshots of what they are playing on their console.

The feature is being rolled out as part of the system's March update and has been on Microsoft's to do list since May 2014 according to division head Phil Spencer.

Taking a screenshot requires a player to double tap the Xbox button in the centre of the controller followed by the y button. Alternatively, they can command the Xbox to take the screenshot with voice controls if a Kinect is hooked up to the console.

At first, the screenshots can be used as backgrounds for player dashboards, but eventually Microsoft will work in social media integration to allow for these to be shared.

Anyone on the Xbox One preview program will get to play with this feature ahead of March.

The Playstation 4 by contrast has included screenshot functionality since release through its dedicated share button, allowing players to store screengrabs, video clips of recent gameplay and share these over social networks.

Back in October, Spencer stated that implementing similar functionality on the Xbox One had been met with technical complexity.

Alongside the screenshot feature, the March update will also introduce a suggested friends function. This will recommend not only people you might know, but popular broadcasters and streamers.
