The Legend of Zelda is being worked up into a television series by Netflix.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Nintendo is partnering with the video streaming subscription service to bring the fan-favourite video game series to a television format.

At present, the project is in very early stages and no writer is currently attached. There have also been no decisions over casting either.

Netflix has increasingly been branching out into television production. It has described this project as Game of Thrones, but for a family audience.

An official comment has yet to be issued and Nintendo appear to consider this rumour and speculation, so there is still a strong possibility that the series will never come to life.

The Legend of Zelda has been taken to television before in the form of a relatively infamous cartoon series in the late 80s that saw a single season before being dropped.

Back in 2007, it looked possible that we were going to get a Zelda film with Imagi Anmiation Studios building a pitch reel for a computer-animated Legend of Zelda feature film, but Nintendo declined the offer. Imagi was the studio behind Astro Boy and TMNT.

The latest game in the Zelda series was A Link Between Worlds for the 3DS, set in the same world as the SNES classic A Link to the Past. The game saw a strong critical and commercial reception. An updated version of N64 entry Majora's Mask is also due for imminent release for the 3DS later this week.
